Blew my first Street race in 20 years....

My last car was a 1985 Monte Carlo SS, 530 hp, 383 stroker, Coan extreme 350 turbo auto, GV overdrive, Currie 12 bolt. In most cases people would pull up to it and listen to it lope and just go away. It had nothing to prove, it ran well.

I'm lucky enough to have a WRX STI as a daily driver and then my Satellite for occasional use. The Subaru is a weapon for sure but from the lights I still think the hopped up 318 poly/727 has the edge. The instant torque of the V8 has shut down some pretty fast cars, at least for the first few hundred feet.

I'm too old school, something about old American muscle that only lights my fire despite likely getting smoked by some of those rice grinders.

Most of these little imports are starting to sport LS7 engines. Thats the fad Man they dont mess around for getting the most out of those. Its actually cool to see the car scene is still going well by the younger kids .

My son is building a Turbo 16 valve jetta. Not sure I would want to mess with it when its finished.

I recall being in my Grand National and a guy in a newer Mustang Shelby GT500 or whatever pulled next to me and asked if it was fast.. I said "It's just a 6 cylinder", he laughed and said why do you have slicks on it then? So I started spooling the turbo and when the light turned green I launched and left him like he was in reverse. Next light he looked at me and said "WTF"... I said, "how many cylinders does that have?" With a look if disbelief he said "Obviously not enough".

My buddy has a Grand National, he bought it new. He's thinking of selling it and I'm trying to talk him out of it.

That's cool. They are not worth a lot of money, but for an 80's car they are not bad. But I would try to talk him out of it as well.

Great story!
i used to ride shotgun in my friend Kennys car,out of a small town called dudley mass.
we used to go up to Worchester mass every weekend,
the town had a certain road they closed off under a bridge/tunnel and they let races be held there.
Many times i got the pass seat view of various cars trying to mess with Kenny,
and he would just spool up and leave them all with a big grin on our faces.
that look of utter disbelief you mention, well, thats the one !! lol!

not sure what year his was,but it was a black grand national and he had the stock turbo for maybe a month before he started going Big.
at that time,i had an amx javelin and a 340 duster and a hopped up aspen,
None of which could even touch that v6 car.

Thanks, I have so many mods to mine it's ridiculous. But I can tell you that it runs on Methanol/Alcohol injection, and when dialed up it makes 32+# of boost. Which made over 700hp on the last dyno pull a couple years ago. But the crazy thing is that it sounds like an angry vacuum at full throttle because of the boost.
