Your casting date would be 66, not 68. There will not be a VIN stamped into the block. There should be some numbers stamped on the driver side front of the engine below the cyl head, that would state the model year, cubic inches, and the assembly date of the engine. Your engine would have come from the factory with 230 hp.

i'm thinking that is not original engine and trans

You need to find the stamped numbers on the block, to determine if it could be original or not.

Sorry! The stamping is on the drivers side front, just below the head. I corrected the above post.

1966 318 with a June 2nd 1966 assembly date. If your car is a 1966 and the fifth digit in the VIN is an E, then you need to check the scheduled production date of your car. It will be the first three digits on the lower left of your fender tag, under the SO Number. It will also be part of the body numbers on the drivers side of the rad support. The SPD is not necessarily the actual production date, but it is all you can go by. If the SPD is later than June 2nd, then it could be the original engine.

what is 2488230 on the R/F of the block

Scheduled production date of June 3 1966. The engine is June 2, which looks good for the engine to be original. 2468230 is a poly 318.

ok all good
there is a edelbrock 600 cfm wich is obvious
is there an easy way to check if there is also a performance cam
car idles rough but runs real good

If all you want to know is, if there is a performance cam in it or not, then the easiest thing to check is valve lift. I believe all polys came with solid lifters, and if it still has them, then position a dial indicator on a valve retainer and turn the engine over to check lift. If the lift is noticeably higher than stock, then it has a different cam. Check a shop manual for stock lift, but it is around .390" I think.
