A guy is welding on the '71 and he run into a few spots where someone duct taped a hole then gone over it with body putty. Oh Boy! I may need a new roof.

Guys do crap repairs, they do things like that, spray some paint on it and drive the car. Id rather drive a car in primer with rot then a car with acceptable paint job covering work like that. Id think who ever is working on your car needs to identify all the areas of bodo hiding substandard work. My car when i started the restoration was exactly the same. Best of luck

When I was younger, I used to use rigid spray foam as a bondo backer under large rust holes. Worked like a charm!

Motor been sluggish lately? Check under the hood you may have a team of hamsters rockin the Pistons....

That was a perfectly acceptable repair back in the day. As long as the Bondo was supported while it hardened who gave a crap what was supporting it. Who knew their repairs would still be on the road 20 or 30 years later? And if it was just found when some guy was doing some welding, I guess the repair has held up well. There's nothing wrong with good Bondo work.

Like the old saying goes, "if it sounds stupid but it works... it isn't stupid." :)

The body is the last thing. The car came with a 440 but it had the numbers mactching 383. Rebuilt no miles. Just needs paint and to reconnect the Dixie horn.

I'm thinking the previous owner was a drywall contractor? lmao

It's just the way some people "fix things" as far as they are concerned there doing it right ,my father in law is like this, his sons fire bird had a rust hole in the floor pan he rtv'ed around the area then pop riveted a peace of tin over it . I guess it worked for him. And he says I waste my time cutting metal and welding new in but I like doing it right ,keep looking you'll find more (I hope you don't ) good luck

Beats the heck out of the invisible tape and paint that use to be prevalent on used car lots. Back when panels were not as prevalent you did what you could with what was available. You sure it is duct tape or aluminum body repair tape?

I paid a reputable body man in my area once to trim out my 70 Bee. He did the firewall, doorjambs, & trunk areas. Awhile later I had to change out the fuel tank. To my surprise I found pieces of duct tape everywhere underneath the trunk floor. He had filled all the rust holes with seam sealer. It looked smooth but yes I was very pissed. I had asked him if I needed to replace any sheet metal to let me know. I proceeded to replace the entire trunk floor MYSELF!!! This made me lose trust in any body person in my area. Now I`ve decided to do all the bodywork myself. If I screw it up then I`ll keep working on it till I`m satisfied & maybe learn something along the way. I`m just glad I found this problem before I let the sob paint my entire car.

When we where kids we would help each other fix up our cars and we did allot worse than duct tape under bondo, these where muscle cars in the late 70's, that's just the way it was back then.
When I think about the crap I did to my 70 roadrunner and 69 Torino GT back then it kinda scares me now.

Ya, lots of stuff we did was not precision craftsmanship work, but these cars weren't high value collector items either. Many of us didn't have the skills, tools, training, time & money to produce primo results. And we needed the car on the road, not in a shop. If your intent is a collector or show piece, that's a different story.

That's why I would not buy a restored car. So far I've been lucky enough to buy only original paint cars except for a T/A and it was the rustiest car I've owned.
