727 trans, flex plate to torque converter. I had these bolts in a bag labeled as what came out when i took the engine/trans out. They are 5/16 have slots cut into the head and there were four in the bag. Maybe i screwed up, God only knows but the new converter takes a 5/16 SAE bolt and it would seem 3/4 inch is long enough. Can i use a grade eight SAE? Should i use a lock washer and or a flat washer or should i order new bolts specifically designed for the converter? Thanks for your advise.

The bolts that hold the converter to the flex plate, IIRC, aren't as thick on the heads as regular bolts. I think that is for additional clearance to the block. Don't put washers under them, use locktight and torque to spec.....

Here is a pic from my 383 the heads are grooved, like you said, and they are a larger size than usual 5/16 bolts. The head is not as thick as typical 5/16 bolts....
