Built vs Bought

I always build mine as I always like to do things my way and would usually have to change/improve on what someone else would have done anyway. I sometimes go a little overboard too....

My Hemi is finally coming home after almost seven years in machine shop jail! Looking forward to putting it together!

I had to double check which forum I was on. For a minute there I thought I logged onto the Factory Five forum with the broke dick "built not bought" chest-pounding hack crowd....lol.

Factory Five?
There is legitimacy to the guys that personally built their cars having animosity towards the "Bought" crowd.
Sure, some of us farm out body and paint or the engine build but this topic harkens back to high school where regular kids struggled to put their car together while the kids with rich parents bought them some new sports car....and the entitled kid bragged about how great he was.
Nobody liked that guy. It was like he was born on 3rd base and thought he hit a triple.
Nowadays, there are similar instances where some money guy buys a car and sweeps through the car show circuit. He can't check the oil without watching a YouTube video of it but hey...it sure is pretty.
He could be out on the road with it and have a 1 dollar part fail and he can't figure out how to get it running.
I just can't respect that.

Can't have a buyer without a builder. They go hand in hand. Some may not like it but it keeps the culture alive. Best rule is to not be a dick about it on either side of the carb

I bought lots of cars....factory built and mostly still original. Started with beaters and fixed whatever they needed then once the late 60's early 70's cars became 8 to 10 or so years old and were cheap, I started looking for stuff that wasn't a beater. Seems like nearly every car that I started building after tearing it all down, someone with stooopid money would come and want it and they usually got sold to them. Money talks and BS walks. Helped build other's cars including race cars.

I was looking at RR Fan Dan's thread about repainting his 74 Road Runner, and I couldn't believe what he found under the paint! If you do the work there are no surprises waiting the raise their ugly head! The car looked good before he stripped it! Paint can cover up a lot of sins!

ill chime in my situation and why i "bought".

im young, compared to most here, I have two kids under 9, i own a business that employs 130 people, I coach kids sports, and run a cattle ranch on the side. I've been a cowboy for hire many times and still do for friends. i own 5 tractors, a track loader and a skid steer. you know what i don't have much of? spare time.

id rather spend my time swimming with my kids, or teaching my daughter guitar, or changing the oil with her in the old truck she'll drive first.

i don't have time to get into the minutiae of building a muscle car from the ground up. so i bought a "built" car that needed minimum work. and so far i've torn the steering column down and the dash twice.

when the kids are old enough to actually hold their own in the wrenching department, ok, we can work on projects together and I'll seek one out. but now, my Charger with TKX that i can get the family excited to jump into and go for an afternoon adventure without the care or worry of making it back home is worth every single penny.

and ill be damned if ill be judged negatively for it. i know what i can do mechanic wise but i don't feel the need to be self righteous about it.
Good for you. Capitalization is usually best practice too. F@ck the actual mechanics of things I suppose. Says alot.

I generally build for fun, and buy to drive. I'm also old enough to realize....my time is worth more than money. The older I get, the more I pay to have stuff done. Again, my
time is worth more than money.
Totally agree mm. While I can buy and build I always preferred to build. The moron that thinks building one correctly is the “cheap” way out is wrong. It’s the satisfaction of accomplishing a project. The attaboys at shows is icing on the cake.

Alas I am growing old and tired as well and hire most things done that I used to do myself. Building cars won’t be one of them. I simply have quit building cars. I have enough.

Good for you

Wow, a bit arrogant comment dont ya think

Not everyone has the ability Or even the time to build a car. Not to mention its far cheaper in the long run buy it done
I seriously doubt some one whom has the funds to buy done are of the " not to bright" mentality

I bought my current car done.
But I helped build it back in the early 2000s that count?

I wanted a car but having built A LOT over the years. At my age I had ZERO interest in buying another project / basket case car.
So i wrote a ck, and drove it home and have had a smile on my face since.

Last car I ' built' was for someone else ( 68 Charger RT ) And am currently building a truck ( 1972 Ford f100 ) for someone else with a local buddy of mine. We work on it as time allows, Usually 2 or 3 days a week , maybe 4 or 5 hrs a day.
So Yes I can BUILD them. But dont feel the need to spend all my spare time doing so
Absolutely an arrogant comment. I’ve earned it.

Your not part of the car if you buy it . I will never be able to write a check for a car. Building one lets you pay for it slowly, the only way I can do it. I might not be able to do all of it but I will be proud of mine when it is done. 3 years into it. And I THANK all the members that have help me so far.

"Standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona..."

Is that YOU on the bicycle wearing pink?

No. It’s a girl my lord , slowin down to take a look at me.

Uhhh….”It’s a girl my lord in a flatbed Ford, slowing down to take a look at me”.

There is a robust person standing on the corner and no Ford truck around.

maybe I don't need to seek the validation of others to confirm my self-worth.

But f@ck actual commas, because they are extraneous?

Guys… when encountering a member that is abrasive and otherwise annoying, try the IGNORE feature. It is great. They can write all they want but you don’t see any of it.
I’m following this advice with the guy right now.
