what heads and pistons are you using? 383's are a different ball game. they even fall out of the rules of norm for a big block. back in the day I raced them. very easy to screw one up compared to a 440. 340 pistons have valve reliefs plus a smaller valve and the valves open on the bore centers. it's good your not having an issue but from my experience with 383's and flat tops that cam is a potential problem. stock big block iron heads don't like higher lifts without work.

Are you asking about my 383 or his 340?

Thanks Lewtot. I have X heads and flat tops with valve reliefs. I didn't mean to imply that a 2832 would fit without issue in the OP's motor. Actually, I kind of gathered by the tone of this thread that 383s are a different monster when it comes to high lift cams (I'm a relative newbie and ever knew that). When I get my first big block, that will be good to know. I just was posting that it was no problem in a 340.

good to know that the 340 is more flexiable; thanks for the info. I love 383's but from experience they are easy to mess up.

Not really with ether engine, it’s really more in the combination. Short stroke big bore engines can be easy to over cam. Without the proper converter and gear to make it go, it ends up like a slug. I haven’t found the 340 anymore flexible than any other engine. To be honest, I like the longer stroke engines for street and mild strip better.

you certainly do not want to go with the highest numbers
but stock vs rework - it's a place to start
I use numbers from Stan's site if I don' have any others
but I tend to look at low lift and not chase the higher lift ego numbers.
