Carb spilling fuel

I got up this morning early to start the charger, and after a few turns it would sort of crank, then nothing. I assumed it was cause it was cold this morning. So I tried a little more and still nothing. I looked at the fuel guage and tried to remote start it, it would jump to 6 psi and then 0. then i noticed fuel on the manifold and assumed it was the gasket leaking so i bumped it one more time to find out exactly where and fuel was spilling from these notches in the carb.























My question is WHY. Im 100% stumped at this point. I have no clue as to why it would or even could do this. I was hoping to drive it this weekend but it looks like thats not gonna happen at this point...

Those are float vents. If fuel is comin outta there, the float is probably stuck or there is trash in the needle and seat.

thank you so much, im gonna go throw a few cusswords at the carb now. Anyway to clean the needles and seats without taking apart the entire carb?

Hmmm..Something going on with your needle and seats or the step up-metering assembly's, something's clogged up inside possibly? Would be my guesses anyways..The edelbrock rebuild kit is P/N1477.. Advance auto and Oreilly usually has them in stock and sometimes Twilight Zone. Pretty easy to do and if you never ripped yours apart before you'll probably notice the floats hang off as well as linkage arms and screw settings were a bit off from factory. Maybe some one else will pipe in with some experience in a similar scenario. Only issue I ever had with the eddy's is the accelerator pumps going out.




Top of carb needs to come off to clean the needles and seats...

You MIGHT try an old trick and see if it will work. Start it up. Hold the pedal on the floor since it's flooded. When it starts, you'll probably have to keep it running. With the air cleaner removed, take the throttle linkage and run it up to about 3K or so and keep it there while you close the choke plate. May try it multiple times. A lot of times this will suck trash out of the carburetor.

To me, it's better to take the carb off of the manifold so that you can sit at your workbench to work on it. Doesn't take that much more time and it's a lot easier on the old back. Also, if you take the top off the carb, you might as well clean it inside and out. Definitely check the float level and needles and seats. A new fuel filter is also a good idea.

Just for giggles before you do any of that, take the handle end of a large screwdriver and whack the top of the carb airhorn over the needle and seat locations. Then crank with the remote to see if the vibrations unstuck the needles. If so, you lucked out. Otherwise, pull the top off the carb and check the seats for crud. If you go to Edelbrock's site it has a video showing how to remove and replace the airhorn. No need to reinvent the wheel. Good luck and keep us posted.

thank you all, youve all helped me more than anyone in person has. I really appreciate it. Im gonna end up just takeing it apart and cleaning it. That old gas tank was so rusted out i wouldint be supprised if -something- got past the fuel filters. Im on vacation all week so I got time.

I have done that trick successfully with small foreign car carburetors.
