Hello Everyone, I'm looking for some opinions, I want to change the carpet in my 69 Road Runner and I know alot of you have done restorations. So I was wondering what you have used as far as manufacturer and what you would recommend or not recommend for fit and quality. I want it to look as original as possible. It's a 4 speed console car if that matters.
Thanks everyone, Wes

If money is no object contact ESC and buy their "flat shipped" carpet.
It is made by ACC but the heal pad is exactly where needed and it is shipped in a flat container to you.

In the real world I have found ACC carpet to be junk for the past 10 or so years, it fades in a year and is usually short.
I use Trim Parts and never has it faded and always has extra material.
Your going to find a few people agree with me and your going to find a few disagree.
I have had many hi end cars over the years and I am very picky.
These are my findings on carpet.
Ron

I think there are only 2 manufactures of the carpet for our cars. ACC and Trim Parts. If you are looking for a 4-speed dark green, I have a brand new set that I won't be using. pm me if you may be interested.

Trim Parts is total crap.Horrible fit over the front portion of the tunnel and the heel pad sewn in crooked.Pretty sure i could fit some shag from a carpet store better than that stuff fit.I've had the best luck with ACC

Me too. I just spoke with Legendary last week and they carry both. The rep's opinion was that ACC conforms better, but Trim Parts has better heal pad placement. I am not liking the color fade issue though if that is real.

Oh it IS real!!

I bought an ACC for my 68 B Body and what a peice of junk. Used it for laying under the car to work. Bought my second one from ESC their "flat shipped" carpet. Nice and thick and many inches of extra carpet on the lenght and width fro trimming. Go for the gold ECS

I thought I read somewhere that all 4 speed cars came with black carpet only???

if i'm understanding comments so far correctly

ACC whose carpet fades and has bad heel pad placement but good fitment makes good carpet for ESC (ships flat) which doesn't fade and has good heel pad and fitment and enough materiel to hold it securely under the scuff plate. Have i got that correct?

I bought a black carpet years ago for a 70 Sat convert that faded very quickly to purple and I pretty certain it was ACC and i recall not having enough to get it to fit securly under the aluminum scuff plates.

also 68redrunner i'm certain i've read somewhere that all 4 speed cars had black carpet at lest in 68-70 b-bodies but have no idea if that is true or not so now am curious on that as well

Yep and Yep but I've never touched with my own hands an ECS (ACC) Carpet.
I doubt it doesn't fade and turn Purple like all other ACC carpets I've seen and had.
I will continue to buy Trim Parts until I get screwed by them, so far from memory ACC has failed or come up short for me 3+ times and Trim Parts 2 successful purchases.

I know that 1969 Road Runner 4-speeds were only available with black carpet. Chargers could be had with different colors.

I used a Trim Parts carpet in my 69 Belvedere automatic. Plenty of material but poor fit round the tunnel/firewall transition.

Someone else on FBBO was selling a carpet from Legendary (ACS or trimparts) and ordering one from ECS (or is it ESC??). That tells me something too!

So is the one from ECS really better? If so, how can it also be made by ACS?? If it is better I will order it. Anyone else confirm?

I put in a repro carpet from Year One in another car 3 yrs ago (don't know who made it) and it didn't fit worth a crap! What a pain and couldn't get the bunches to lay flat.

from FABO in 2009:

There was a thread on moparts about this. I will sum it up. Basically ECS Automotive Concepts sells a carpet kit that is supplied to him by ACC which is made to his own specifications. ACC's quality in the past has been pretty poor. ECS has them shipped to him flat and the carpets are stacked in a clean manner so your carpets come clean with no dirt on them. The heel pads are also a source of frustration as far as location. Motor Parts South originally was the company that started trying to make an accurate reproduction and has done a great job. You can buy from them as well. I guess all repop carpets are made by the same manufaturer which has varying specs for different companies. ECS ships the carpets to you flat which is more expensive but is worth the cost. Here are the info for the different companies offering carpets that I spoke of above.

Motor Parts South states that they are not affiliated with ACC or Trim Parts.

Did some more research and have found lots of happy customers with carpets from Motor Parts South. Here's a photo from another site. I'm ordering through them. They don't have a website, just a good 'ol phone # (shown above).

carpet

I have purchased from legendary with great results. When I say great results, that means that the carpet was not just placed in, cut for fit. Not at all, the carpet needs to be massaged into place starting with the correct location of the heal pad. You absolutely need to use a good steamer to dial in the corners/contours for a super fit! If you don't use a steamer, you are at the mercy of the mold. One thing I also use when locating holes for seats, trim, console, etc. I use a cheap solder iron and melt down through the material. This will make sure that you don't turn a screw in the hole and pull out a length of woven thread(if it has not happened to you yet, it will and you will have a line of material missing from the carpet and looks very bad). Just my opinion, Steve OCD RestorationIMG_1272.jpgIMG_0320.jpgCIMG0153.jpgIMG_1336.jpg

awesome tip on the soldering iron and steamer, thanks!

I just placed my order with Motor Parts South. 2 week lead time. I'll let you know how it turns out.

What does motor parts south charge for their carpet kits?

you know, I forgot to ask! I'm sure it's less than ECS. I'll let you all know when I find out. At the very least it will be on my packing slip when I get it in 2-3 weeks.

One thing I like is they let me order it without jute backing since I'm installing Raamat peel and stick BXT II and the Raamat peel and stick foam under the carpet (you can order without jute backing, detached, or fully attached and the heel pad can be ordered dielectrically bonded like factory, stitched, or both)
