I ‘m rebuilding this Carter AFB 4barrel carburetor, model 4131S.The current accelerator pump channel has a check ball and seat at the bottom that has a tiny spring inside of it . How do you replace the check ball without damaging the tiny spring and the tiny retaining tabs ? Could the check ball be replaced without the tiny spring assembly if it gets damaged ,and will the carburetor perform ok without it? Please advise, Thank you!

I have rebuilt a lot of AFB's in my time, and have never touched that ball and spring. Just flush it out well with spray brake cleaner and compressed air. In my experience, that 4131S Carter is a common swap meet find. 1966 383, automatic.

If you bent those tabs they break off. Believe it or not, I had a check valve out of a carb and it was assembled spring first, and ball second. So ball held open. Tabs broke. Replacement check valves are available.

Allstate Carburetors in NY sells that check valve
