Carter AVS Metering Rod Dimensions / Specs?
Does anyone have a list or know where a list of AVS metering rod sizes (dimensions / specs rod diameters) can be found? Does anyone know what size the AVS metering rod 16-546 is?
Thanks for any help, John

AVS carbs used a three step rod and those are pretty much non existent these days. Get a mic and measure the tip and the large part of the rod that is in the jet and use that info to get Eddy AFB replacements. You will be able to see by the worn or shiny part of the rod how much of it is in the jet. Oh, and if you convert to two step rods you will need the flat caps. AVS carbs should have the caps with the raised domes.

Thanks for the replies.
The Edelbrock AVS metering rod numbers are different than the Carter AVS numbers. The metering rods are slightly different (longer) also. Edelbrock uses 14xx numbers. I’m looking for the Cater AVS metering rod diameters from the ‘60s and ‘70s carburetors. Carter’s numbers are 16-*** for their metering rods. I’ve searched the web and here and have not come up with the specs for the original diameters. I have a 16-160 metering rod that mics out to .058" x .051". I was trying to find a listing of numbers and their sizes.
Not all raised domed cover metering rods are 3 step. The service manual even states that the 16-160, 16-546, and others are 2 step and they have the domed cover. They are slightly longer. I any case I would replace it with the Edelbrock 2 step rods if I knew the diameters but I don't have the rods (16-546).
I’ll keep looking. I’ll have to start another thread on the carb I’m trying to rebuild and set up.

Thanks for posting Mopars & Missiles. That is exactlywhat I was looking for. I’ve also been looking for that 10-202 Strip Kit youhave. I am having trouble reading the numbers. Can you verify the numbers inyour kit are as follows? Or please post another picture.

Carter 10-202 Strip Kit for AVS carburetors
Rods in kit:
16-404 .063”x.060”x.051”
16-575 .065”x.062”x.053”
16-546 .066”x.064”x.055”

16-554 .0675”x.064”x.058”

As it turns out I have the 16-546 metering rods but they arenot marked. That is why I was trying to find the specs. The rods came out of aCarter 4734S for a 1970 383 AT. The 1970 service manual says the 4734 has16-546 metering rods and .089 primary jets. Also with there only being .001”between the 2 steps and the Service Manual calling it a 2 step rod I assumed itwas only 2 steps. So, I stand corrected. Depending on where you mic the rod lengthwise and how it is rotated you will vary by +/- .0005 or more easily. Plus I’mnot using new parts. Even so, I figured I should measure the rods and jets andcompare them to specs to see what I’m putting in there.

I’m trying to clone a 4426S from a 4635S that I have on hand until I find a good 4426S.

The link I posted says that they will sell the kit. Not in the original case but from nos stock and machined pieces.
