I’m so sick of cellphones! I appreciate the vast amounts of ease they offer us humans, but to be tethered to your phone, to stop interacting in three dimension with the people and things all around you, to constantly need to take photos of every blasted thing you encounter, and to lose your ability to function if you lose your phone, I can’t even put into words how sad that is. Today, while out and about running some errands, I encountered some idiot talking very loudly on their phone while moving through the grocery aisles and would not stop. I wanted to tell her to pipe down with the verbal and give us a break from having to hear her ranting and raving. But I thought better of it and went about my purchasing. After leaving the store and just as I was exiting the parking lot, I saw an accident just occurring at the exit, and sure enough, it was this same idiot who had the phone grafted to her ear, not paying any attention, and thus colliding with another driver and their car. Add to that, others that were now blocked were out of their vehicles and taking pics as fast as they could. WTF??? It is just getting worse and worse!!! I was able to maneuver out of the exit lane and backtrack the parking lot to another exit and head back home, so I was not all that inconvenienced but just annoyed by the idiot and the rest of them and their cell phones...cr8crshr/Bill :usflag: :usflag: :usflag:

I reckon the 90s and early 2000s were the best balance between old school and newer technology, when phones just served their purpose.

Nowadays, society rears people to be isolated individuals which goes against our primitive nature. We are social beings, we need to be with each other. In my little, I try my best to live my life with old school values, surrounding myself with like minded people.

I see your point, people are idiots and obnoxious, the phones just make it worse.
Being a truck driver even local the paperwork and dispatch info was always a PITA to get. Someone going by the terminal they wait or you wait to meet up and hand over paperwork so you could get paid. Fuel used to go out of route to turn in paperwork, cost of Fed ex or UPS to ship paperwork and not go broke waiting for it to get there. Not ot mention all the compliance paperwork and logs.
Having to write down all the info you need to pick up a load from a pay phone on a limited 800 number, or on hold for what seems like eternity when I would rather be heading home.
Now simple text with initials, yes or no if I want to do the regular loads and simple phone call if not regular. I scan everything though a app on my phone BOLs scanned in by 11am paid out same day. I've never been so caught up on logs, inspections,, etc. in my whole career.
I have left my phone at home and made it almost to the mill to pick up ~an hour drive, so 2 hours to go retrieve it. Borrow a phone from another driver call dispatch get my loads verbally and rode around all day without it, kind of nice not going to lie!
I would not want to go back to the the way it was. The phone makes my job way easier and convenient, making the hardest part again dealing with all the people on their phones while driving. Pretty ironic.

As with most everything, the problem is the people, not the inanimate object.

We use to drive downtown to the local speed shop or mall to find out who's racing who and where that night, no phones used to figure it out.

If you want to find where the next kegger party is go to school because that is where you'll find out, no phones used to figure it out.

Boy I miss those day's

All good memories

Just let me grab my phone a minute.

I could do fine without it all. No cell phone, no computer, no B.S. I drive truck too (just part time thankfully) the driver above made good points alright but I find depending on the company it has enabled "last minute reaction dispatch". Rather than a customer calling a proven trucking company ahead and reserving a load, thereby enabling the dispatch to organize your load a few days before and laying everything out to you in a timely manner and maybe think for themselves the best way to run the trip, the customer goes to a broker, the broker puts it to bid to the cheapest, low life bidder and you get dispatched at the last minute (usually with later changes). I don't know how may times the dispatcher phones me at the last minute with a "couldya?" that all comes from no proper planning and it happens over and over again. Also I'm driving a big rig and peoples lifes are in my hands, stop friggen bothering me and let me do my job safely. How many times do you follow a big rig these days and it's all over the lane, kicking up dust from the ditch? Yeah the friggen "pro" is texting his dispatch. Unsafe.
I leave my phone at home as much as I can, people don't like not being able to get ahold of me at the exact moment they want to is just too bad for them I guess.

Run Charger, Thank you being a safe truck driver, we appreciate it. The trucking industry has lost most of its professionals like most other trades.

Didn't used to be.....and the world kept spinning just fine.

When we were growing up phones had a tether on them, you couldn't leave the house with one. Now days...

I may be the only person on the planet that doesn't own a cell phone.
The only reason that this old man has a cell phone was in the past, AT&T informed me that they weren't going to be servicing land line telephones anymore, where i live.
Had no choice in getting one.
