I took out my 440 Charger today which was a hot day..I drove the car today, and when I was in traffic, the temp gauge went to 220, then just over to the next mark. Maybe 230? The coolant was completely topped up when I started the journey..I went to have some tracking done and the car was off for about 30 minutes...when I started it again it still read 220..If I'm moving at a decent speed, it goes down to about 190... Is it running too hot? Or is that about right or could the gauge be faulty..

You don't have enough air flowing through your radiator when the car isn't moving. Replace your fan clutch (if you have one), make sure your fan belt is tight/good. You might want to wash out the fins of the radiator & replace the radiator cap & antifreeze while you are at it (preventative maintenance)

Details of your cooling system are required for anyone to offer an intelligent response.

If this is a new problem, there are two things I would check:
- there is a spring in the lower hose [ you can make one from a wire coat hanger ]
- thermostat. Any doubt about it, get a new 180* stat.

Yup, that's getting very hot. Need more info though, are you running stock fan or electric? Got a shroud?
It's the stock fan and Radiator
It drops to about 190 when it's on the motorway but otherwise stays at 220..The fan is working properly..I noticed today after I turned it off for 10 minutes and restarted it that the gauge hadn't dropped and still red 220

It's been like it since I started driving it in the hot weather

did you check lower hose? Do you have a fan shroud? Is this all original stuff on the car fan, shroud and radiator? Did it run fine for years and now problem? Add a mechanical temp gauge to see if factory gauge is working correct. Does your car puke out anti freeze when turning off? Still need more information to help.

Verify the temps using an infrared thermometer against what your dash gauge is reading. As mentioned, any changes or work done on the system? When was the last time any work was done on it? Coolant look clean? Last time it was flushed? Radiator isn't clogged with bugs? I have a screen I mounted in front of the rad to keep insects out. If there hasn't been any changes and it used to run fine, flushing out the radiator, block, and core with a new stat might be a try. Make sure the system is burped as air pockets can cause overheating.

"Stock fan and radiator" and "been like this" does not add any further information, Look at these prior applicable ^^ questions.

This particular "cooling issue" has been asked and answered at least 200+ times. PERHAPS, the OP should do a search for answers to his car......the fixes range from simple suggestions and checks to perform OR furnish all the specifics.....coolant temps into & out of the engine, ambient air temperature into the radiator, air temperature exiting the radiator, Cubic ft/min, or CFM of air thru the radiator, RPM of the fan (RPM), number of blades and their pitch angle and diameter..........rather than cluttering up the FBBO server with the same questions.....expecting a miracle solution to a complex problem and conditions......btw....does the car have A/C, origional radiator, and what water pump being used and what thermostat is being used.......btw ......the fix is NOT likely to be trained air in the block, missing spring in lower rad hose, wrong pressure cap, incorrect timing, vacuum leaks, bulkhead wiring, wrong spark plugs, slipping belts or incorrectly sized radiator, etc.........just a casual observation........

Yes, good suggestion, lots of history to be found doing a search on just about any vehicle hassle, cooling, electrical, brakes, etc. Maybe the mod’s could have a reminder line to do a topic search before creating a new post. Some maybe don’t want to take the time, there’s thousands of posts to search. Took a lesson eons ago from my dear departed dad, I forgot a few times: Look for the simple things first to rule them out before moving onto more invasive-pricy fixes. Of course, elementary, but was great advice. Another is factoring what was done last and when could apply? Not unusual for some problem being caused by work done recently. And some are picky on maintenance, others not so much.

In this case gathered that the car had run fine, no overheating and suddenly it is. Not knowing maintenance, condition, apparently no leaks, or what work may have been done, wouldn’t be inclined to buy a new radiator, fan, pump, etc. until considering some of the simple suggestions…that might determine the need for one or more of those.
