I have some 906 heads with dual valve springs. Just wondering If it is alright to run these still springs to break in my cam in a new motor? I heard somewhere to remove the inner spring for cam break in? Also I have steel shim Mopar head gaskets 0.20 compressed thickness ones. Do I install them dry or is there a sealant to spread on them before I install.

Hi 367. good to meet you. I am running 906 heads, and the ones I got used had single valve springs. So I used a set with flat dampers in them when I re built the heads. Don't think they came stock with dual springs, other than possibly the 440 6 pak engine. A lower spring pressure is always a good idea when breaking in a new cam. Also use a cam break in oil supplement from comp cams or similar lubricant. I've heard that a zinc additive is also helpful. I would use the outer spring only for cam break in. Good luck.

Also 367, when using the Mopar .020 steel shim head gasket, I spray mine with a light coat of Aluminum Spray paint. Been doing this since 1972 and never had 1 leak! The Mr Gasket ones are already coated and dont require any additional sealant. I have a set of these on my 440 now, and no issues. Also I use a little oil on each bolt, and snug them down. Then torque in factory recommended sequence to 30 ft lbs, then 40, 50, 60, then 70 ft lbs. This gives gradual and even pressure across the entire head/block surface.

don't run in a new cam with dual springs. don't confuse an inner spring with a dampner spring. i use copper coat on steel shim gaskets.

Perfect that pretty much answers my questions guys, What is this copper coat and aluminum spray? I can just see the guys at the parts store scratching their heads now lol

That copper coat spray a gasket looks like the best option. The Aluminum spray paint I used, is just an ordinary can of silver spray paint. It has powrered Aluminum in it. And as I said, it always worked well for me. Good luck, 367.

Thanks Garys1969RR, hopefully I can get my heads cleaned up and secured on by next weekend. Still have to order head bolts though.
