Swapped out tappered axles on my 64 Polara. I bought a set of axles from a 67 Coronet. I removed thrust block as recommended . assembled the axles but seemed to go in hard as I tightened the flange nuts down the axles became harder to turn . Should I have cut the axles back some or am I missing something. Project seemed to be straight forward. I'm thinking axles are up against thrust pin.

I'd measure the old axles.. check length vs the new. I'm not familiar with tapered axles but I would assume there is a witness mark where the bearing/race once was or still is. Could be a reference point on length.

`67 axles should be quite short....unless you might have a 62-3 or max wedge housing?? Just spit-balling. Do you have the original axle shafts to compare or measure still??

No unfortunately. I'm going to pull them tomorrow. I did measure axle and inside tube length , measured out a little over 27". I'll see what the axle ends look like. I hope I didn't bung everything up.

When I cut the axles for the road runner I tapered off the ends after I cut them. Gave it a bevel like the old axles.

dadsbee swapped think a whole 67 rear into 64 Dodge and said rears was narrower, think 1.5". Is there a kit to put later 65 and up axles in a tapered axle rear?

I do not think the later axles will go in the tapered axle housing. The whole end of the housing is different. I am pretty sure the wheel bearings are different as well. The bearing grease seal is part of the mounting flange on the later axles. On the early rear ends, a separate grease seal gets installed in the housing after the axle goes in, and the small hole brake plate holds everything together. The detachable hub allows this.
I have always understood that the tapered axle rear end has to be replaced as a unit by a newer unit, as Dadsbee and I have done on our Polaras. I found that the '68 - '70 rear end were very close to the same width as the '64, so I used 1969 Charger units on both of mine. The narrower '66 & '67 rear end, as Dadsbee used, will allow use of a slightly wider tire. As mentioned previously, Chrysler did this same trick to get wider tires on the S/S cars by using the narrower '63 rear end on the '64 cars.

64 housing doesn't have a step deep enough for the axle seal to be used with later axles. The bearing retainer on the shaft crushes the seal. I've used Green style bearings with no axle seal. The bearing itself is sealed. Check the length and make sure the later axle you are using isn't to long as well.
