...and the "new posts/recent posts" has no way of knowing if there are any.

You're already signed in/logged in or you WOULD NOT be able to post messages here. You have to log out first if you want to log in again. Look for your name or avatar picture at the top of your phone or computer then click log out. Then you'll see a login button/link. Click it and enter your username/password to login. If you do that and don't remember your username or password then you'll have to click on "forgot your password" link and follow the process to set a new password. I wouldn't bother signing out if i were you.
