A guy who i went to school with passed away in a single car accident the other night.

http://www.kbzk.com/news/madison-co-sheriff-identifies-local-man-killed-in-crash/

This makes it the 3rd person who i knew that has died not wearing seat belt and im only 27. Probly at least half a dozen more that i didnt know that where my age or younger in a town of 14,000.

I know im sure there is more to the story, but seems like everyone has there own opinions on seat belts. Im uber paranoid not wearing one

Always. Since 1967. Says alcohol maybe too.

Absolutely! I've always used seat belts/harness since cars started coming equipped with them. I'm pretty old, so I can remember when most cars didn't have belts. I've installed them in several cars and trucks that didn't come factory equipped with them.
A guy that I knew was killed just a few days ago when his truck left the road for unknown reasons and crashed into a concrete abutment just a couple of miles down the road from our place. He wasn't wearing his seat belt. I really don't understand why anyone wouldn't wear belts while they are driving. They are obviously a proven lifesaver.

I hate them, we didn't wear them in the 60s and 70s and made it this far, whats next, lock the door or get a ticket because the door might open and you will fall out?

Always. Every time. No exceptions.

I had a buddy who said he had the "right" to not wear one. I said sure, go ahead and don't wear one, but write a contract with your insurance company doesn't have to pay any medical bills injuries you would NOT have gotten if you had one on. The thousands (tens of thousands? hundreds of thousands?) of dollars extra would be paid by you, or your widow.

I have had people tell me that the air bag protects them. From rear end accident injuries? From rollovers injuries? From the other idiot in the car who isn't belted in hitting you like a 200 pound sack of cement, or you slamming into your spouse or kids?

My mother-in-law, not wearing her seat belt, hit the corner of a parked car while doing maybe 15 or 20. Not enough impact to deploy the air bag, but enough to crack her ribs on the steering wheel. Had she had her harness on, she would have had a few bruises.

I worked with a lady who regularly crossed the bridge over Lake Pontchartrain and said she didn't wear her seat belt because if she went off the bridge into the water she wanted to be able to get out of the car. I pointed out that the deceleration from hitting the water at 55 mph would knock her out and/or cause enough injury (see mother-in-law story above) that she couldn't get out of the car on her own.

He also has the "right to stay off the taxpayers dime at the emergency room.

Yes, my wife makes me wear them.

You hate the belts, or the law that says wear it or pay a fine? i can agree with hating laws that force you to do something for your own good. Cause it starts with seat belt laws that dont cost
you much. It is a small one time fee added into the price of the car. You already have it and wear
it, in which case the law does not bother you, or you are one of the few who grumble and wear it
reluctantly. But what nobody sees is that a precident is set where the government can force you to do something for your own good. Next thing you know you have to buy healthcare yearly that meets the government standards or else. Ok. Rant over.

I've been wearing them since approx 1983 when I joined the AF. I got used to it and understood the safety factor. My Dad used to kid me a little when I was home on leave when I put it on just to drive across our small town .. later he wore his just as religiously thank goodness. It's automatic for me and I don't even think about it.

My younger brother was killed in a car wreck and probably would have survived had he been wearing a seat belt. He was thrown out and and wound up under the car that crushed him.

Yes we both always wear our seat belts all the time for probably the last ten years.

Just over twenty years ago a good friend of mine was in a bad accident and he wasn't wearing a seat belt. During the impact he left his seat and came down on his shifter. The shifter was forced up his backside, smashed his pelvis and ended up protruding through his lower abdomen. During the impact his leg was also backwards and ended up twisted under his seat.

He lost his leg, his spleen, and a large portion of his lower intestine. He had to have his pelvis wired back together and what was left of his organs from the waist down down were horribly damaged.

I now always wear a seat belt!

I have worn my seat belt since 1988 when I bought my first new van. Glad I had it on the day I was T-Boned on the Garden State Parkway in NJ. I rolled over going 75 MPH woke up when the van finally stopped, the van was on its roof, I released the seat belt dropped down and crawled from the wreck. Walked away with 5 Herniated discs in my neck and back

Always wear my seat belts and I am specifically updating four of them (front and back outboard seats) on my 70 Road Runner to modern day 3 point belts. The original style shoulder straps are really not very usable, so this is my way of ensuring my usage and safety.

The tough guy responses work great before anything has happened, but anyone who has lost someone due to lack of use sings a different tune...

Always, every time, without fail . . . even before it was the law.

Modified the lap belt in one of my old cars to a 3 point harness - I feel much safer with that then just the lap belt.

Seat belts were invented & installed because the ambulance drivers are to lazy to look for the bodies.

Like most guys , I was hardheaded when I was younger , and when I reflect on some the IDIOTIC rides I had back in the day, I'm glad to still be alive. The dawning day for me was when I had children !! I couldn't stand the thought that one of my kids would be hurt in an auto accident later in life. So.... I started wearing them to send the CORRECT message. Glad I did.
