Does the Passage of Time Alter Our Perceptions ?

I have heard that before about the rust. I heard about that with the Chevy Vega as well. I find those rumors hard to believe.

Back on track....I hear songs like this and they confirm that some things from the past FAR surpass what we have today.


It may be an exaggeration, but the F bodies are a pile of junk. I lived through that era. Usually, a newer body style is an improvement to the prior. Yet, they scrapped the proven A-body with this junk mechanically and structurally. They started rotting out very quickly.

I lived through the era as well, driving A bodies from the 1960 model year until 1975. My '75 Valiant was still solid when I traded it off in 1987, even after all those PA winters. Some friends of my wife bought a 1976 Volare, after previously owning a '66 Satellite, and were horrified when the fender tops rotted out in a little over a year, and the engine started burning oil at 30,000 miles. When I graduated from Penn State in 1975, I moved to suburban Maryland, where the weather was kinder to sheet metal. I had two buddies in the gym were I worked out: One drove a '68 Road Runner, the other a '73 Vega. The Road Runner was still pristine, with faded original paint, and 65,000 original miles. It looked like a new car when Gary had a friend respray it in the original QQ1 blue. The Vega that Dennis owned was another story. We spent a weekend working on the fender tops and quarter panels with fiberglass to fill in the holes. I couldn't imagine that degree of rot on a two year old vehicle that hadn't seen salt covered roads..
 
I guess I was impressionable enough to love those cars when they were new. I learned to drive in my mum's 74 Gold Duster (slant 6)... and loved it! My brothers had a 77 Volare and a 79 LeBaron... and I loved those too. My first car was a 1980 Horizon TC3... loved it!

By the time I was six I knew I liked girls. By the time I was eight, I knew I loved cars!

We didn't realize it then, but there was a move on to strip America of automobiles to save the planet.

Funny.....I saw that album cover and mentally started singing the song in my head. Know almost all of the words even though I have not heard the song for decades at least.

Of course, the A-body Duster was a great car. Chryco had to start correcting the numerous errors in the design of the F-body right from the start. The Cordoba b-body kept Chryco afloat until Iacocca saved the company with the K-car. Omni/Horizon was also instrumental. They improved the F body with the J & M styles.
 
^^^ I have read that Mother Mopar changed the method for cleaning/priming in '76. All was correct by sometime in the '77 model year but it was too late, the damage had been done! Warranty fenders still abound to this day! Is what it is.

Not a rumor at all there Kern, Like WileE, I worked at the dealership near Pittsburgh Pa when they were new.
Salt,and fallout from the steel mill coke plants destroyed many a new car. And not only the F bodies.
Bought a new Aspen in 76.By 77 front fenders had holes. Chrysler replaced them.By 78 lower quarters were gone.
Traded it on a new 78 Power Wagon. 1 year later the rad support was gone. 2 years later I had to replace the bed...
