Does this piece stay there? Quarter panel replacement.

Hope everyone is doing well.

I'm replacing the complete quarter panel on my 1968 Road Runner and near the lead seal, under the drip panel, there's a triangular piece (the one with the drilled out spot welds) that I am wondering if it is from the old quarter panel or another piece that is supposed to be there?

Thanks for the pics. I do have to clarify that I did cut above the joining panels. On the roof portion. There was rust right above where the quarter and roof meet. Did you have to pull the drip rails down a bit, about two inches from the end?

I think the new quarter slid just behind the drip rail.
