I did a search but did not come up with anything on this subject. I'm looking for a recommendation on DOT approved 15 inch front tire for use on my 4 inch wide front wheels. This would be similar to a drag front runner size tire. Maybe a 155R15 size or something like that. Thanks

Two questions first, how tall do you want the tire, and do you race the car? If you race, you might want to adjust tire height to account for, or change reaction time.
Typical dot legal front skinnies seem to be 165 (80)r-15, about 26" tall, with 145s and 155s available. I have three sets that size, latest bought a set of firestones (don't know where made, suspect not usa). Most in these sizes are either chinese or korean, Korean being preferred.
If you are looking for taller than 26" ,that's where things get tougher. Australians have access to a 185x80-15 that to the best of my knowledge is not available in the U.S. That leaves Mickey Thompson SR 28" radials as about the only choice left, and I believe they are over $200 each.
To visually fill the wheelwell of my 62, I went with a seven inch wheel and a 235/75-15. It's heavy, but it looks better and slows reaction time, helping avoid red lights. I can always put the short tires back on if I need to.

Do your search for 70s Volkswagen bug tires.

You can check on tirerack.com and see all the sizes and specs, with the exception of the drag race front tires made by M/T, Hoosier, M&H, etc. Be very careful to check the weight limits , rim width and speed rating. Most of those small tires were meant for much lighter cars.

195-75 --15 is a good size, might be hard to find these days though. I've tried 165R15 (popular VW tire size) on the street but they lock up easily especially when it's wet. Too small for a car that size.

Depending on the height that you want, and if you were considering the 145 -15, they do make a 175 65 15 that is the same height as a 145-15 just wider

Thanks for all the replies, I went with the MT Sportsman 26x7.5x15 4 ply tire. I could have gone with the 28 inch tall tall instead of the 26 inch but they fit great and drive well. All good.

                I've run 215/75's on front-runners.
