i'm wanting to replace the full trunk pan in my 70 sport sat but leave the trunk extensions in there.I'm guessing there's a whole bunch of welds in there

Now an area the you can not get the drill into is the quarter to dutchman panel seam. Another is the trunk to extension seam. I use a blade and hammer here. Carefully work the blade down into the seam. Be sure to go in-between the metal, not into it. Work you way down the seam til you get to a weld. Slowly go over the top of the weld to the other side of it. Turn the blade around and go back the other way. Keep working the weld back and forth. One side then the other. Mostly use the side edge of the blade, not the end edge. All the time watching that your not cutting into the panel. You'll either cut right through the weld or the metal just around the weld. Either is good. After that weld move the blade down to the next and repete. Some welds you'll go right through, some not so easy.
I use this method on several areas. Rear tubs to floor seams. Floor to firewall seam. Quarter to Dutchman seam.
I also do this when drilling the back side of the welds to find and cup the welds. Makes drilling alot faster.

You are really doing some great work there and thank you for this very educational thread. Glad you posted this as I was preparing to buy some Blaire spot weld drill bits and now know which ones are the good ones. Thanks and same goes for the knives. I'll be starting soon on removing my floor pans (partial) and trunk pans, dutchman panels, and full quarters both sides. And who knows what else I'm going to have to replace. Still planning my attack on these issues. Thanks and keep the pics coming, I definitely need it for referencing.
