Does anyone know how I can determine the drive shaft specifications for my car? Part number? I know I can measure the length etc but let’s assume I don’t have one.

1970 Plymouth Sport Satellite small block with a A904 trans.

If no answer I can measure mine from the 70 charger. 318/904- 8 1/4. You did not say what your rearend was.
It’s the same 8-1/4. I put a 340 in but should be identical. Let’s see if anyone chimes in to protect your knees!

The original driveshaft in a 1970 Sport Satellite with 318 and A904 transmission is 55.47" long, part number 2883791.

Note that the 1970 Charger has a one inch longer wheel base (117") than the Satellite (116"). The original driveshaft in a 1970 Charger with 318 and A904 transmission is 56.17" long, part number 2883792.

Both driveshafts are 3-1/4"in diameter.

Although the original specifications may still fit what is in the car, measuring to ensure the same is prudent.

Presto! Great, exactly what I was looking for! Thank you! So where does one find this information?

This specification information was taken from the 1970-1971 Chrysler Parts Catalog, publication numbers 81-690-1000 & 81-690-1002.

I have a printed copy, but a digital version is available on MyMopar.com

I am getting some vibration that I have not nailed down. I want to start with the basics. So I want to replace the u-joints on the drive shaft.

Does the transmission tail shaft on the 904 use a bearing? Would this be a good time to replace it as a potential suspect in the vibration?

Does anyone have the Spicer u-joint numbers for my drive shaft? Zerk or no zerk?

The A904 transmission uses a bushing in the extension housing, or tail shaft, for the slip yoke on the driveshaft. If the condition of the universal joints are unknown, they are more suspect than the bushing. If play of the slip yoke shaft in the bushing is not excessive, and the surface of the slippart is good, the bushing is good.

The original driveshaft, part number 2883791, in the Satellite has two 7260 universal joints. Dana/Spicer replacement universal joints for these are as follows:

5-1306X
5-1307X
5-3228X (grease fitting in cap)
5-1306-1X (grease fitting in cap)
5-789X (heavy duty non-drilled universal joint, without grease fitting)

Grease fittings, or zerk fittings, can be a weak spot in high torque, high traction applications, but for general street use work fine. Personal preference dictates beyond that. To maximize the joint strength, install with the zerk fitting under compression during shaft rotation.

Alternate universal joint brands and part numbers for the 7260 series, FYI:
