I am getting some vibration that I have not nailed down. I want to start with the basics. So I want to replace the u-joints on the drive shaft.
Does the transmission tail shaft on the 904 use a bearing? Would this be a good time to replace it as a potential suspect in the vibration?
The A904 transmission uses a bushing in the extension housing, or tail shaft, for the slip yoke on the driveshaft. If the condition of the universal joints are unknown, they are more suspect than the bushing. If play of the slip yoke shaft in the bushing is not excessive, and the surface of the slippart is good, the bushing is good.
Does anyone have the Spicer u-joint numbers for my drive shaft? Zerk or no zerk?
The original driveshaft, part number 2883791, in the Satellite has two 7260 universal joints. Dana/Spicer replacement universal joints for these are as follows:
5-1306X
5-1307X
5-3228X (grease fitting in cap)
5-1306-1X (grease fitting in cap)
5-789X (heavy duty non-drilled universal joint, without grease fitting)
Grease fittings, or zerk fittings, can be a weak spot in high torque, high traction applications, but for general street use work fine. Personal preference dictates beyond that. To maximize the joint strength, install with the zerk fitting under compression during shaft rotation.
