Drivers Ed

Growing up on a farm as soon as you could reach the steering wheel and push the clutch all the way in you were driving
Started out driving the tractor around the field while dad picked rocks
Then moved up to raking hay ( seems the rows were never straight and was pointed out a few times )
By the time I was 16 and went for my learners permit I had already been driving tractors on the road between farms for a couple years so it was no big deal
First thing I ever drove on the road all by myself after I got my license was the farm truck which was a 75 Ford half ton
Got my first speeding ticket in it also a couple days later from the local town cop even before my real papers had come in the mail
 
Still drunk from the night before, I took the test Saturday morning on my Kawasaki 750 Triple. Tests were done only on Saturday mornings
I was idling along, weaving in and out of the cones, when the damn bike chugged a couple times and locked up. Didn't have time to throw my foot out so I fell down. "oh no, does this mean I fail?" Instructor said try again. This time I gave it more throttle and passed the test. My license photo looked more like a mug shot. It was obvious I was in rough shape.

I took mine in my brother's girlfriends diesel stick shift rabbit. Failed the 1st time because the car had a marker light blown out had to go back the next weekend as they would not let me put a bulb in it and come back.. Was an easy test whipping that little car around.

I had a diesel Rabbit in the 80s...... pedal on the floor might get you 70mph with the wind

and it never seemed to use a drop of fuel either... This one used oil though as it leaked everywhere.

My friends dad had one, 83 mph with a tailwind varied between 78 - 83 going accross Canada to Sarnia depending on a slight grade.

First car I drove was our 1964 Pontiac Strato Chief, it had a 283 Chevy which had zero compression 2 speed automatic, manual steering, manual brakes and a manual choke (add on).
Painted with oil base house paint and a roller.

You were pretty busy driving it.
But it worked most every day. My dad had it for a few years sold it to a friend of mine who drove it until it lost reverse a few years later. It was very rough by then perhaps around 1984 or so.
 
We had driver ed but I can't remember what the cars were. I think they were fords:rolleyes:. I DO remember right after I turned 16 my older brother purchased a 68 Dart GTS, 383 TF! That thing would fly, if you could keep it straight coming off the line! That car started my lifelong passion for anything MOPAR! The following year my older sister purchased 68 Chevelle 396 4 speed convertible! I would borrow them when they worked the night shift at the local factory. The GTS would WALK on that Chevelle!:lol:

325 horse 96 was not impressive stock, and that chevelle might be 500 lbs heavier than the Dart, and harder to launch with the stick. I'm not surprised.
