Growing up on a farm as soon as you could reach the steering wheel and push the clutch all the way in you were driving
Started out driving the tractor around the field while dad picked rocks
Then moved up to raking hay ( seems the rows were never straight and was pointed out a few times )
By the time I was 16 and went for my learners permit I had already been driving tractors on the road between farms for a couple years so it was no big deal
First thing I ever drove on the road all by myself after I got my license was the farm truck which was a 75 Ford half ton
Got my first speeding ticket in it also a couple days later from the local town cop even before my real papers had come in the mail

Still drunk from the night before, I took the test Saturday morning on my Kawasaki 750 Triple. Tests were done only on Saturday mornings
I was idling along, weaving in and out of the cones, when the damn bike chugged a couple times and locked up. Didn't have time to throw my foot out so I fell down. "oh no, does this mean I fail?" Instructor said try again. This time I gave it more throttle and passed the test. My license photo looked more like a mug shot. It was obvious I was in rough shape.

I took mine in my brother's girlfriends diesel stick shift rabbit. Failed the 1st time because the car had a marker light blown out had to go back the next weekend as they would not let me put a bulb in it and come back.. Was an easy test whipping that little car around.

and it never seemed to use a drop of fuel either... This one used oil though as it leaked everywhere.

My license test was taken in my dad's Country Squire station wagon. When it came to the parallel parking test, I was sweating it.

My friends dad had one, 83 mph with a tailwind varied between 78 - 83 going accross Canada to Sarnia depending on a slight grade.

First car I drove was our 1964 Pontiac Strato Chief, it had a 283 Chevy which had zero compression 2 speed automatic, manual steering, manual brakes and a manual choke (add on).
Painted with oil base house paint and a roller.

You were pretty busy driving it.
But it worked most every day. My dad had it for a few years sold it to a friend of mine who drove it until it lost reverse a few years later. It was very rough by then perhaps around 1984 or so.

That thing would fly, if you could keep it straight coming off the line! That car started my lifelong passion for anything MOPAR! The following year my older sister purchased 68 Chevelle 396 4 speed convertible! I would borrow them when they worked the night shift at the local factory. The GTS would WALK on that Chevelle!

325 horse 96 was not impressive stock, and that chevelle might be 500 lbs heavier than the Dart, and harder to launch with the stick. I'm not surprised.

In High School our drivers ed course was supported by the local chevy dealer, the school had a 1972 Impala with dual brake controls for the instructor, when I took it. When I graduated, I went to work at the local Chevy dealer and one of the things I did was prep those cars for the Driver Ed program. We took out the carpets, installed the dual brake pedals and then put in a rubber mat. Cars were used for one school year, then brake controls removed and carpet reinstalled, then sold as a low mileage demonstrator.

In 1969, my high school had a Road Runner. By the time I got there, they had a Rambler Ambassador.

We had drivers ed class in high school, remember those "Blood on the asphalt" films?
Also had hunters safety class that was available, we all brought our guns to school on Fridays for that.
Montana in the early 70's, sure miss it. I hate it here in the future.

A go cart for years on end as a kid.

A 1964 Pontiac Catalina 2 door when it was legal for me to drive on public roads.

In high school we had class time with those stupid simulators and a '75 (?) Chevrolet Caprice 4 door after school. The school Driver Ed fleet also included a Chevy Monte Carlo, but that was for the cool kids.
