eBay Hates Its Small Sellers

Isn't the point of a garage sale to get rid of items you no longer want, or want to store, with making a few bucks as a side benefit?
I can understand that point of view if the stuff you're selling originated from a dumpster or off the side of the road.

Hey now, my 'new' dryer came from the side of the road lol

I got this broke off in me today.
This is a radio I sold for about $45. I think my what I received was about $31. So they are taking over 30% (promoted listing.) The buyer paid over $70 including tax and shipping.

My box was a little crooked because I cut it down. I must’ve measured the short end haha.

Anyway, that inch cost me another $5.75.

So if you aren’t familiar with shipping costs, and sometimes think you’re being overcharged for light items, remember “dimensional weight.”

An extra inch on that dimension should not have had an extra charge.

If it was 13x17x8, there is a clearly stated extra charge for that.

I got screwed. Seller sent me a bike part for a Triumph not a Suzuki, seller is giving my money back but Epay Shipping is getting $50 in shipping both ways plus I am out $20 on brokerage fees, so on an $80 part I am out $70, seller is out his Ebay fee I imagine. Shippy Epay are the only ones ahead for their crappy transportation. Scam city.

Sounds like it might have been better to just eat it and list the part yourself.

That's why a lot of online sellers tell you to just keep the part and we'll send a new one.

Let me start by saying ...with all due respect...

I'd laugh my fool head off if someone having a garage sale threatened to smash an item I made an offer on.
Yes, agreed. I just can't handle the mentality that EVERYTHING should be negotiated right down to a .50 cent item. But you are correct, getting rid of the stuff is the point, and we just donate or pitch (mostly pitch) that kind of little stuff, now, rather than dealing with the garage sale crowd.

Not only are the relentless fees eBay charge exorbitant, the "free return" policy ridiculous, but the funds policy is draconian, where if I simply buy an ebay supplied shipping label for $8?, it's deducted from my account the same day within 7? hours, but if I sell an item with a "buy it now" listing on ebay requiring immediate payment, the funds arrive in my account nearly seven days later.:wtf:

I'd also like some mandated transparency included for the buyer's sake informing the buyer the seller only received $X amount of the $Y they paid.

Swap meets. Cash, no receipts, shipping, disputes about the item, warranties, refunds. Doesn't get any better.

A few years back, when I started my needed downsizing, I listed a couple of nearly intact restorable 62 mopar project cars, that realistically I was not going to get to. I listed them for 6? months and asked what I believe was significantly below the market price, of $500 each. But with this caveat, when the buyer picked up the car or it was shipped, I would refund $300.
Not a single taker or tire kicker.
I scrapped them, got $400 each.
A terrible outcome IMO, but at least I tried.

I guess that’s one way to do it.

I’ve done swap meets and gun shows over the years, and usually by the end of the show I’m thinking “there must be a better use of my time.”

There are a bunch of benefits to selling online. But the corporations and government entities have figured out how to squeeze every last nickel out a a sale, and that cancels out a lot of the benefits.

I guess it’s just the evolution of the thing, and something better may come along.

My wife’s been slowly whittling down her doll collection on EBay, almost every sale has some hiccup associated with it. Hope she gets it all done soon!
Bought &sold on FBBO , much more enjoyable.
