Engine 383 or 361 #2128854-1

Asking the same question, 361 or 383? casting number on the side of the block is 2128854-1 whuich my book lists as a 1964 361/383. The pad under the distributor is the confusion it is stamped 6-3 HP T41, does anyone have any idea what this means, there is no 36 or 38 on this pad.

Have your machinist check the deck height or stroke length, There was a high block 383 produced in 1959 only.

That's two..... ;)

I pulled an RB 383 out of a 60 Chrysler.

I did get a picture of the casting # at the distributor area on the block.

V 38
HP
415

Looks to be a 383. Not sure what this HP stands for. High Performance?

No idea on the 415.

The HP stamp would help distinguish the 4bbl assembly from the 2bbl assembly.

Can you share a pic of the stamping, and a pic of that general area?? Thx
I've tried and the photos even with added light do not show well. But cleaning the pad did show what was stamped. 6-3 HP T 41

Can you pull the distributor and get a better picture? That casting # shows up as a 1964. If you don't find any other #s on the pad it might come down to measuring the cylinder bore.

The casting number 2128854 is used for both 1964 361 & 383. You're right it may come down to pulling the heads if needed.

Should be able to measure a piston skirt if you take the pan off

My 1966 361 had the casting numbers as shown in the picture. You will note the LS under the casting number. I believe that stands for low small (bore), which is a 361. LL would be low large for a 383. Likewise a 413 would be RS and a 426 would be RL.
