God bless good engineers who write code to to circumvent EPA idiocy.

High combustion chamber temperatures equal high efficiency; translation of heat into cylinder pressure and motion.

The nitrogen oxides produced are the same gas produced in lightning discharges,
which become weak nitric acid, a fertilizer that falls from the sky for free.

Only in America could we outlaw a natural process and product of high efficiency, and then declare it to be "pollution."

Fact: Those VW diesels get better fuel mileage without all the EPA crap, which means they burn less fossil fuel which also means less exhaust in the air, but it's slightly dirtier.

Fact: with the EPA crap, they burn more fuel and get less MPG, which means more exhaust go into the air, but it's slightly cleaner.

Where is the logic and sanity?

It's cleaner when combustion temperature is higher; more energy goes into useful cylinder pressure.

NO-2 and NO-3 are not pollution, but part of a natural food chain cycle that includes plants....for the same reason farmers alternate between corn and soybeans...which help set nitrogen back into the soil...

D'oh!

From the article, it looks like the software is only applied when trying to prevent engine damage, limp mode. It also sounds like the software is legal, but they didn't report its existence to the EPA.

No wonder FCA is pissed off. With the way it was reported, people are going to automatically assume they did the same thing VW is in trouble for!

You realize the fines are for lying, correct?

Yes..about "rolling eyes" compliance with bureaucratic policy absent science.
The oxides of nitrogen argument was disproven 40 years ago, but the EPA clings to it like a teddy bear. And every attempt to control NoX has hurt mileage and our our economy, both at pump, and our agricultural productivity.

Nitrogen dioxide is an irritant gas, which at high concentrations causes inflammation of the airways.
When nitrogen is released during fuel combustion it combines with oxygen atoms to create nitric oxide (NO). This further combines with oxygen to create nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Nitric oxide is not considered to be hazardous to health at typical ambient concentrations, but nitrogen dioxide can be. Nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide are referred to together as oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
NOx gases react to form smog and acid rain as well as being central to the formation of fine particles (PM) and ground level ozone, both of which are associated with adverse health effects. Now how true this is doesn't really matter, does it. I hate the EPA!

NOx can also be produced by high cylinder temps even if the compression is fairly low and what kind of temps do today's engines run at. This is why I always go in for my emissions inspection in the winter time with my Dakota. That dang thing has always produced high NOx and it's usually been over the limit the last 10 years but without the air filter element and on a cold day, it'll pass. And no, the cat doesn't seem to help clean it up as a brand new didn't do a thing after an inspection tech told me it would. That's the job of the EGR system which in my case, needs attention but the only reason I haven't tried to make it work better is because the truck has been high since it was new so I'm thinking I'll just be wasting my time. Running it on the tester in a lower gear also helps to produce lower numbers. So, test days are as cold as possible, no filter element and short rear tires and premium fuel and if possible, a cool engine. :D If the temp gauge is too low, they will usually let it warm up a bit but since my stat is stuck open, it doesn't get all that warm anyways so they just figure the gauge is off and do the test. All the other numbers come in good even with dirty oil.

Yes, it's awful that Los Angeles has little natural air circulation.
I'd rather see a river be a natural deep green than have bright green algae blooms on the surface from fertilizer runoff.
I remember when no one ever needed "lawn food".

Amazing how BANG,, the wolves get all over this, ready to ransack the industry, roll heads, levy impossible fines, but we can't get Clintons investigated & charged.
