My dad got this for his new 505 and after months of working on his car, we were ready for the engine to fire up for the first time. The instructions say a cdi box should be used, so my dad got the rebadged summit cdi, new 440 source electronic distributor, new wires, new plugs, hell, even some 91 octane gas. After finding a few leaks, we are ready to lite this B!TCH OFF!!!! NOT!!!!

The engine just cranks, no spark, no fuel, no nadda. So after 3 days of trying to figure out WTF, I'm going to call FAST in the morning and have them go over everything with me.

Now, I'm electrically stupid, I know that, but this is plug and play and hook up a few wires.....I did my 5,7 hemi swap myself, so this SH!T shouldn't be this FRIGGIN' complicated.

Well, hopefully FAST will have good customer service. I'll be curious to hear how you make out, because I'd like to put a system like that on my car eventually.

One (maybe dumb) question: I understand that if the FAST system wasn't working you would get no fuel. Does the FAST system control the spark too? I thought that would still operate separately...

The cdi box controls the spark, Fast is just fuel.

I sure hope they can set me straight.

There must be something stupid that is being overlooked. Ask me how I know. Go back and check all electrical connections and verify power with a test light or volt meter.

I know, something that I overlooked....kinda easy with just 1 eye. That's my excuse for now, lol!

if you are not getting fuel or spark it sounds like a power distribution problem.where are you pulling power for the ign and injection from?seperate source or same one?

While my dad is at school teaching the youth of tomorrow, I went over to check out what I have done/overlooked/whatever. My dad connected a wire from the coil + to the 12 volt switched (ballast is gone so that is where power is coming from), I took that off. Bingo, Fire in the hole.....until I let off the key and then it dies. I think we have the timing off cause it spits and sputters while cranking.

So I think this what I need to do......find a good 12 volt switched while cranking and running, and reset the distributor timing. This should do it.....hopefully!!

Oh the joys of a carb ;)

X2. I don't have anything against FI, but the companies selling aftermarket fuel injection systems love to tell you over and over how easy they are to install and tune. They even name themselves FAST, EZ, etc. I'm sure that a lot of guys have installed these without a hitch, but I've had several people come into the store trying to find someone to help them get their car running right (or running at all) after trying to install one of these systems. It's usually something fairly simple that gets overlooked but you can pull a lot of hair out trying to figure out what's wrong if you don't have any experience working on FI. It may make sense to go to FI if you are going to put a lot of miles on your ride and drive in cold weather, etc. I just can't justify the cost, plus I'm just an old fart that likes carburetors.

sounds about right... good luck & have fun, thanks for the update, come back & tell us what you think & how it works out for you...

Still wont start, and the battery went down. We reset the timing, checked the plug wires, and it backfires thru the tb.

Where's the FASTMAN when ya need him?

Do you have the option of getting it running with a carb first?
Seems to me, you have things electrically out of whack.... All systems should be installed and proven before going to the FAST system as the source of troubles.
Hooking a wire to this or that to get ignition power ?, have you proven the dist is in correctly and not 180 out? How did you set the timing?

The ballast has ign and start, a pigtail to connect them is supplied with the cdi box so you have power during crank and run. That part is dead on...finally. I pulled the number plug, bumped the engine with my dad holding his finger over the hole, got top dead center, found which terminal the rotor is pointing to, wired the cap counterclockwise 18436572, turn the key and it spits/sputters, shot fuel out of the tb, move the distributor a tad, still spits/sputters and wants to fire, but a no go.

The plug is blacker than night, so it's rich as hell. My next move is to redo top dead center, look at a fsm for initial timing, check the marks on the balancer/timing cover and set it to factory specs, redo the plug wires to match number one and knock on wood, it should rumble to life.

What more could I possibly do to get this going, I don't know!!!!

Starting with a carb is not in the cards as he sold it to member GITEX.

I got that beast to fire and run...woohoo!!!

Turns out that the timing was spot on, but the tb was completely closed. You need to follow the instructions on the hand held for full open and full closed, which we did, but the adjustment screw was totally wrong. So while I cranked, my buddy cracked the throttle and BINGO, we have fire in the hole.

www.fastmanefi.com Richard Nedbal company # is 1-209-247-6497, you could go to the site & contact him thru that too... he 's here in NorCal

The timing is advanced too far cause the engine doesn't want to start after it is at operating temp. No biggie, this weekend we will back it down. I found an oil puddle under the car, and I thought it was the rms, but my dad checked the sending unit, it was loose, problem solved. The water temp sending unit for the FAST had a tiny drip to it also, got that tight. No leaks anywhere else, so as I left my dads house, I said..."wait til I get down the street, then you can do the HAPPY DANCE"!

He is pretty stoked at the moment, as am I. I also checked all the weld joints I did on his ss exhaust, no evidence of leaking. Now he can come over and help me stuff my 383/trans into my truck, lol!

Just thought I would update this thread..........

I went over to my dads house just to BS about my uncle's 70' RR that I just finished and my dad said that he thought the car was ready for a drive around the block. Fired up the 70' Challenger, put it gear and finally under it's own power, he drove it out of the garage after 25 years. Damn that car looked good!!!! The brakes could stand another bleeding, and an alignment, but just to scoot around the cul-de-sac it would be fine.

I will say that the 505 has balls bigger than church bells!! Just doing about 5 mph, the tires will go up in smoke!!! Yeah, wider tires will be needed. So we have yet to drive it on the "road" to really see how it will do, but the FAST 1.0 seems to be running just fine!

Cool. Thanks for updating us! I bought the FAST 2.0 system since your first post (learned a lot), and I am in progress to install that on my car as I am restoring it. I haven't even tried to fire it yet, that is a ways off, but I worry about it when the time comes. I have made a number of changes that I have integrated all together, including an bigger alternator/charging system, FAST FI, Computer controlled distributor, MSD ignition, and A/C components. I hope all the mods work!

Anyway, nice to hear it is running well!

By the way, we'd love to see some pictures!

I'll get some shots on Thursday when I go back to tidy up some stuff.
