My Dad and I are restoring a 1966 Dodge Charger 383 4spd we picked up last month and Ill be documenting all the restoration here in this thread!
I was watching that one for a long time, but it was just out of reach. Glad it's getting saved! Welcome to FBBO
Hi guys/ and girls! My names Kyle Welch and I recently purchased a 1966 Charger 383, all numbers matching. My dad and I are currently in the process of restoring it and this site has been so helpful already that I decided to create an account here to document and ask questions from you all!
My Dad's first car ever was a 1966 Charger 383 4 barrel 4spd, so we went out and found this one. Its definitely ROUGH, but fixable.

It rained all day here today but yesterday I started to clean out the old rotted torsion crossmember to get ready to weld the new one in, had a little hole in the rocker i decided to patch (sprayed with rustproofer first then a little primer so it didnt rust overnight, dont mind the quick shitty job) and realized i needed a few more replacement pieces to make this safe for years more to come. Ordered the inner rocker to frame rail brackets from ebay!

The person who painted it that color didn't do any prep work and painted over everything... even got blue paint inside the windshield.
Car is originally AA1BB so it's going to be extra buffed silver with a black pinstripe going down the roofline!

Update time! In the past week or so Ive replaced and fixed;
The inner rockers that were rotted,
The Torsion bar support crossmember,
The front left framerail, and framerail to firewall support,
And started patching rust areas in the firewall.
It called for rain this week, so I couldnt work on the car as I had planned, so my Dad had bought some rear quarters and new doors from a guy down in florida, we flew down there to pick them up and drive them back and the guy threw in a heater box in better condition than either of the ones we have for free!
Now were home and hopefully the rain stops soon so I can finish this front end before it gets too cold and snowy.

Been a little bit since I posted last, but its been getting colder and its almost that time to stop working on the body of the car because of snow and cold.
In the past week or so, Ive put in new front frame rails, both shock towers, patches on the inner rockers, new seat brackets, and im about to weld in the new floorpans tommorrow! My dads been working on the K-member and thats getting sandblasted and painted then re-assembled so we can put the front suspension back on to move the car.
Heads have still yet to be returned from the machine shop, and thats the only thing stopping us from rebuilding the motor right now.

It is very precious to have a father & son project these days. My sons were too old when they started having interest in my Mopars; wish they had gotten it earlier. I have one thought; in one of your earlier posts you said that you were going to have the roofline pinstripe in black. Just want to inform you that my ´66 Charger was originally silver and she had a red pinstripe. Now, I don´t know how many pinstripe colors were offered, but I can imagine on light and one darkish. Perhaps others can chime in about this issue.

thats a great tidbit about it being red! Was your interior red as well? Our fender tag said it was a black stripe because of the black interior
Nice progress! You guys are really digging into it.
Did you remove that rear light assembly and trim or was it off the car when you purchased the car? That is one part I have to remove on my 67 before my car goes to paint. I Have looked at it a few times to remove the fasteners but it still seems like it is fastened onto the car securely and I don't want to break the lense upon removing it. How difficult was removing it from your car?

Holly moly! You guys are awesome! Thats great looking metal work for sure. Getting it back together with that donor metal is what its all about. Great job my friends! 66/67 is the best.

we removed it from the car, its really not that hard, there are a bunch of nuts on the back inside the trunk that you remove then take the bulbs out and the whole assembly just pops out
Ok I will give it a try. I have new trim pieces to put on. Thanks
