Fire breather

If you have not blocked off the EGR then you have a big vacuum leak. Seal that off 100% and get the timing right, quit guessing at it.

Pull #1 plug and bump starter with coil wire off til you can feel compression, holding thumb over the hole. Timing mark should be coming up to tab, line up with 0 mark. Pull distributor and check that dist gear slot is as close to parallel with the crank as possible. Reinstall distributor, rotor should point towards passenger side front. Verify #1 wire on cap lines up with rotor. Vac advance canister should be pointing in direction of #1 cyl. Check firing order counterclockwise as previously mentioned, reinstall plug and coil wire, once fired use a good timing light.

If you smell gas on dipstick drain a cup of oil if you can. Smell gas I'd change oil and filter. Loosen drain plug enough for a slow leak, be prepared for drain plug to fall out! If you have a lot of gas in your oil you can mess up your bearings.
The advice about timing is all good advise.
