Hi, my name is Petey, and I have a problem.......

My wife is going to kill me and several of you might too....

I bought a dune buggy. It's a Kellison Sunpiper pickup.

It's as far from a Mopar as you can get but I NEEDED it

The body work on this thing is near flawless. The metal flake in the paint is amazing but the mechanicals and electrical are a mess.
This isn't a bad thing. I'm great at mechanicals and electrical but suck at body to this was right up my alley.

Don't hate on me too much

Oh, and on my first ride I made it 50 feet out of my driveway and I let the smoke out of the electrical system. The main battery disconnect fried....along with the starter.
Pretty sure the bendix on the starter didn't disengage. I heard a rattle but figured....it'll go away.

It did not

Well, since it only went 50ft I'll offer you $1200.

No hate here, I've been waiting for one to pop up for years.

Well, actually it did... Just not in the way you'd hoped... Dune buggies are cool, wind in your hair, sun on your shoulders... As you push the car back into the driveway.... Sorry, gotta have my fun... But they really are cool to tool around in once you get the bugs out... Wait, don't get the bugs out... Unless you have a Porsche engine floating around...

I like it.

I'd have to put sand paddle or off road tires on the back, though.

That looks like a fun little buggy - you'll get no hate from me. Now how much your wife will be happy about it, well, who knows? You may have to really be on your best behavior around the house for a time!

Good luck with the fixes needed - hope they aren't too major.

No hate here....except I'm not a fan of VW engines :D

Well if I had sold it to you I’d have a satisfied look on my face because my famous 50/50 absolute guarantee held true. 50 Feet or 50 Seconds Which Ever Comes First. :poke:

I do have a rare nos Mopar piece you could add to it, a 1985 Dodge Diplomat front license plate frame. I see a perfect spot on your spectacular red buggy. Motor on!

Pulled the starter last night and it's definitely fried.
Lucky NAPA has one and it's pretty cheap as is the disconnect switch.
I should have it back up and running by tonight

stay tuned...... :praying:

I wanted one so bad in the late 60's when I was a kid!.. Good score dude. I remember you could buy all the parts out of the Sears catalog. Are there ANY dunes near you? That one looks pretty modern.

Cool buggy, we have one in the steel storage bld.
My stepdads old one. Factory tube frame job. But has a corvair. engine and glide.

Great idea they are fun as all heck...
I won't judge you negatively...

I'm sure I forgot a lot about them too, been 40 years now...

I never thought I'd be VW guy, I was for a while

I have had a few VWs, mostly off-road stuff too
a White 68 Beetle, my stepbrothers car, he wrecked
He didn't want to deal with it,
I gave him $300 for it
got a new front suspension, out of a local wrecking yard cheap, like $50s
took all the "metal' hood & fenders off the front
& engine cover & fenders off the back
& I turned into a Baja-Bug,
fortunately, it was a white tilt 1 pc. white fiberglass front end
no paint necessary :poke:
(Fiberglass Trends, fenders, scoops & front end IIRC)
some 15x6" slots, with 225/60/15" tires front
wider 12" white fenders rear to fit 295/50/15 on 15x10" slots
lil' triangulated push-bar upfront
& skid plate to protect the fuel tank up front
with a Judsen Blown (runs of a simple deep V-belt)
1600 DP/73 engine & down draft Webber,
with a nice extractor (that's a header for the none VW-ites)
aftermarket Empi & SCAT 'go fast VW parts',
billet alum mech. adv. dual point distr. & billet alum. degreed crank hub
& VCs, I did put a big oil cooler on it at the recommendation
of a buddy that owned S&S Automotive in Antioch Ca.
he was a German car, VW & Porsche expert,
I org. didn't know **** about them
I did put a rollbar in it too, I figured I'd need it
I drove it crazy, it handled really well...
All the engine stuff... It all, at least dbl'd the org. HP,
maybe like 160-180 hp (?)
The thing didn't weight even close to 2,000#s
(I'll bet like 1600#, never weighed it)
fun lil' rig & it was fast (for a beater VW)

I beat and embarrassed many a BB muscle car guys with it
in Concord & Antioch area, late 70's early 80's
But it was spent in a 1/4 mile, 95 to 100-ish mph, but got there quick
but that's all I needed

the lil' bitty drum brakes were scary, as hell
I did do a disc. front swap, like a year later
that thing was cheap to build & fun as all hell
tones of seat-of-the-pants time in it, amazed what it'd do off road too
(I was a 4x4 truck guy too)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I also had a 68 Myer Manx dune-buggy, 2 seater
paid $1600 for it
it needed a motor, most the rest was there
no top was the only bad thing
(MY MUSCLE/RACECAR BUDDIES ALL GAVE ME **** TOO)
had the org. Metalflake Gold under the gelcoat
Built with a similar DP engine combo, as above, but 2100ccs,
big cans, better rods, bigger valves a lil' more compression/lot bigger bore
& ported the DP intakes :blah:,
bigger diameter alum crankshaft hub, for more overdrive for the blower
it was Judsen vein blown too, allegedly, should have made north of 300hp
it was scary fast, for a weigh nothing Dune Buggy
it'd float around a bit at speed, still didn't stop me...

but;
I will tell ya', it was a wheelie machine,
I ate clutches in that thing really bad/often
always showing off & dumping the clutch
& wheelying across intersections downtown

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought my then GF a 77 turquoise & black convertible
VW Super Beetle FI 1600 (or later a 79 SB FI Orange & Black for me)

Down the rabbit hole I go.
Put the new starter in and replaced the battery disconnect and it fired right up
This time I made it to the end of my development, maybe 1/2 mile then....sputter sputter sput...poop

towed it back to the garage....again

here's to hoping next time I get at least a mile

The ignition switch is junk!!
ignition post loses power when cranking and it sticks which is what fried the starter.

Just ordered a Painless switch and entire new harness

good move  glad that you found it too...

have fun, I know you will

Ended up replacing the entire ignition system. The distributor advance weights were all bound up so it was stuck at 30 degrees. I put in a Pertronix solid state (no more points) along with a flame thrower coil, wires and NGK plugs. Adjusted the valves and played with the carb and got it running pretty good. Tooled around with it yesterday enjoying the weather. The longer I drive, the worse the clutch got. No slipping but not releasing well and grinding a bit getting into 1st or reverse.

The last clutch I bought was for "The Beast" (twin disk McLeod) and it was rather spendy so I was pretty happy to see a good replacement clutch with pressure plate, throw out bearing, clips, tool was a whopping $81 from rock auto.

I've seen a few vids on how to remove a VW engine and it looks pretty simple. I guess I'll find out first hand in a few days.
