I swapped out LH studs for RH studs this weekend and much to my surprise I was able to knock the studs out with a small ball pein after drilling/grinding out the material near the swedge. I first cut the studs off with a cut-off wheel, then carefully center punched, next drilled about 1/2” deep with a 1/2” bit. I used a die grinder to further relieve the material near the swedge and voila, a couple good licks with a ball pen and punch and they dropped right out.

in most instances, if you do NOT plan on reusing the studs, you can just knock them out with a hammer without having to cut or drill the existing studs. just an FYI. Looks like you did some good clean work there though.

Last time I did that, it ruined the drum. Some might work that way while most won't.

In the past I have taken a deep well socket, big enough to fit the head of the stud inside, and backed up the drum from the inside and hit the stud w/ a 3 pound hammer and they popped right out. Maybe a little PB Blaster woudn't hurt first.

Great pix and discussion. I whacked on my 2 broken studs. Even tried the socket back-up trick. Those dudes are stuck! Going the drill press route. Thanks for the info confirming my next steps. GM learning Mopar :-)
