Hi All,
A while back I found out I had a leaky gas tank at the point where the inner-filler tube and gas tank meet. Also, it appeared as if the inner-filler tube backed out of the tank itself. The pic below shows the leaking areas in yellow:
I used that as an opportunity to clean out the entire fuel system.
In restoring eveything I replaced the leaky grommet with a new one. However, the leak persisted at the same spot.
Another pic:
At this point I was comtemplating the following solution (let me know if this makes sense):
1: Weld on a 90 degree (or other angle) piece of steel tubing to the point at where the original inner-filler tube would have been inserted into the tank
2: have that new welded-on piece extend a few inches toward the inner-filler tube & also cut the original inner-filler tube a few inches at the tank end
3: span the gap between the newly welded-on piece and shorted inner-filler tube with rubber hose
I mainly want to get rid of the grommet (i've had the luck of leaks at that point).
Other pics for reference:
Also, this is the gas cap that is currently on the car:
Can I use a newer sytle gas cap? I have heard of "vented" gas caps. What do you recommend?
I think my inner-filler tube backed out of the tank because of pressure in the tank. Is that possible?
That is why I think I need a new gas cap too.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
watermelon
