This is probably a stupid question and I apologize in advance. I recently bought 1972 RR clone after going about 20 years between muscle Mopars. The stock cap sits very loose on the tank pipe. Is this right? I owned a 72 in mid 90s and had a locking gas cap but don't recall it being loose like this. Is this how the tank vents and it's all good? Or should 72 B body gas cap be snug? Thanks.

The "stupid question" is the one you didn't ask!

Your cap might be missing the gasket or seal. It should be snug, not loose fitting. Or its the wrong cap altogether.

Thank you. Khrysler. I'm sure it's the right cap. Must need a gasket or seal. That's what I suspected but thought I'd ask. Thanks again.

If it is too loose, you'll leave a trail of gas when you leave the station with a full tank.

There was a production change mid year '72 on the caps and filler necks, could have a miss-match on the cap and neck.

before 4/15/72-left, after on the right.

Thanks Roadrunner. I think you solved it. She was built Feb. 4, 1971, in Windsor, Ontario. So I need cap on left. I have the cap on the right. I had seen there were differences before and after April 1971 but I had 72 on my mind, so I discounted it when I saw 1971. Of course, that's the production date and that's what mattered. Thanks RR GTX! Especially for taking time to put in photos. Very appreciative of that.
