On a 74 Runner, I need to know how snug the fuel tank should be at the top where it touched the trunk floor.
The bolts were rusted on when I took the tank off so I coundn't really tell how tight they were. The tank has two bumps on each side at the back near the axle that are touching the trunk floor. I just don't want it rubbing and wearing away. I live on a bumpy dirt road which is why I am asking.
Thanks

Thanks Runner, I have the pad on top of the tank I was not sure if it was to act as a buffer where the tank meets the body, I thought it was just for condensation.

Roadrunner tank

I did mine about 6 months ago. 73 Roadrunner, so basically the same car.

Tight, really tight. I wish I had a second person with me when I did mine. I had a really hard time doing it by myself and I can bench press 300 pounds.

These are large tanks, so they are heavy when they are full. Just make sure the straps are well secured (The strap retainers must fit well) , and have no chance of popping out of the slots.

I drove mine in even further, after they were installed, just to make sure they were never gonna pop out of the slots. Mine kept trying to pop out. Adding fuel will help with that problem.

Must see pics of your Roadrunner now that advice has been given. (lol) Thanks Troy

Troy because mine is a 74 it has the stupid vapor lock hump on it so the black pad has a large split down the middle so it will fold around the hump.
Ok story time... I had to replace the sender anyway and the tank had a very small leak..it would drip one drop like every week...very small. Anyway on ebay I saw the tanks for the 74s were much more expensive than the 73s but still I was thinking about buying a new one. I noticed on the ebay ad the tanks are made in Canada by Spectra. Well I live about an hour away from the plant. I went to the Spectra website and found my tank and emailed them if I could buy one. I got an email back that they don't sell to the public and I have to go through a dealer.
Here is the catch, the tank on ebay is $ 269.95 U.S and shipping to Canada was another $135 U.S that is $405 U.S
Now I called two dealers and the price ranged from $890 to $1050 Canadian.
So to ship the tank from Canada to the States buy it in the States and ship it back to Canada is cheaper than me buying it here!!!!!
So long story short...I fixed the tank.
But I did buy new gas tank filler neck grommet and the new J bolts from ebay worked great.
Thanks for the tip, I will pop out and crank it up a bit more LOL
