Got a call from a friend who's car acted up. Long story short, horrible crap in the gas he had just bought.
They denied it, but he lives in a small town and wasn't the only one. They had to have a bunch of cars repaired.
Though almost never, it can happen.

I filled up with premium years ago and it was half water. Had to get a tow home and used the electric fuel pump to dump my tank in the driveway, I didn't type that did I? Anyway, the gas station paid the tab and admitted they knew the gas was bad before I filled up. Needless to say I never went back.

After a similar experience, a station owner I know bought a paste that reacts with water. He puts it on his measuring stick and checks every time he gets a delivery.

It's actually Daffodil Yellow. Our local Molar club was on a cruise and found this old gas station. Pumps likely haven't been used in 50 years.

Is the car farting & coughing, spluttering, stalling, or just cutting out?

Guy at work was going snow mobiling 2 hours north of us. Temps were in the low teens stopped at a gas here to fill gas cans for the sleds. When filled the sleds he realized half the can was frozen water. He drained the tanks just encase.

A late friend filled his Silverado one day. It immediately started running bad. Got it back to his shop and while troubleshooting it the engine hydrolocked, ventilating the block.
The tank was mostly water.

FYI , If you pull in for fuel and see a transport off loading. Go on down the street to the next station.
Most all under ground storage tanks will have 2 to 6 " of water on the bottom.
That all gets stirred up during the off loading.
There is a stand pipe inside the storage tanks that comes within a foot or so of the bottom of the tank.
Really stirs up the crap when you offload for a 1/2 hr of so.
Many of the newer stations have a filter at the pump to keep the chunks out
