The Salvation Army is the only charity that is not top heavy with management. Much more of your donations go to help people in need.
This is exactly why we gave about 10 years worth of our 2 boys shoes/clothes/jackets from infant to age 10 minus some sentimental stuff. The Salvation Army gives this to people in need verses selling it like Goodwill. When I went there the guy said just put it in the container outback.. I went there and it was a little door I went in and asked him if he could open the side door he said why and I told him too much and too big to put in there. He was ecstatic when he saw an 8ft bed filled up with contactor bags up to back cab window ....

The other day a local (Mazatlan) orphanage came by to put on a recital for fundraising. They get a van and some material support from the Salvation Army, but have to raise their own operating budget. As far as I could tell there was at least twenty to thirty kids living there full time. They were happy, healthy, beautiful kids being kept safe from things that I don’t want to know about. It costs just under CAN$42,000 or US$37,000 to run this for a year. When I consider that you couldn’t run an after school program in Canada for several times that I nearly cried. In Canada I’m middle class, yet I make the Mexican minimum DAILY wage in about five minutes in my nice union job.

This time of the year, I always keep a bunch of $5 bills in my wallet for the red kettle. I'm far from rich but I have more than some, so I try to give back.
Wounded warriors, ASPCA, DAV and Sherrif's association are my regulars.
