Took a drive in my 65 Belvedere today and backed out of a parking spot that was on a hill. Brakes made a terrible grinding noise that I have never had before. Sounded like metal on metal. Drove home and brakes were fine going forward but grind in reverse when I checked it when I got home.

I am going to pull wheels off and inspect everything but any ideas to start with? Front brakes were converted to disc but still drums in the back.

I used the parking brake while checking transmission fluid so I don’t know if something could be hung up. There is a good bit of play in the front suspension so it could be related but that is a battle for another day.

Shoes might be fitted the wrong way around - there is a leading edge on brake shoes.

Post #2...or....don't drive in reverse...

Reversed brake shoes do not cause a grinding noise, they just wear unevenly.
