I saw an old post of a member having somehow reconfigured the right exhaust manifold to get rid of the mid point exhaust connection. It matches the rear out setup for the left. Seems like a fantastic redesign and trying to get in contact with him if he has any left. Anyway I had been considering headers until finding out about the big hassle with fitting them in my 63 fury and rare makers of headers for b-body 318's along with high price. Thinking if I port and polish the manifolds that could get me in the ball park of a header-less set up. If anyone has encountered this appreciate hearing from ya. Ron H.

I think headers are always going to work better than stock ex manifolds, no matter how much porting / polishing you do. Headers are just more free flowing than the stock ex manifolds.

I've considered polishing/extrude honing my HP manifolds for some time. Even went as far as discussing it with my local machine shop. Not worth our time or money. The best that we can do is smooth the transitions from exhaust port to the manifold and have them ceramic coated. I've looked into the coating process already and for $200 I can have the pair media blasted and coated inside and out. Still less expensive than headers and for essentially what is a factory rebuilt 383, plenty of flow.

Go with TTI headers. No fitment issues. Cost up front is more but they will breath so much better than a ported manifold. Spark plugs are very easy to change too. Have to switch to a mini starter but it can be installed and removed without unbolting the headers.

Thanks. Do you by chance recall a guy on the forum that somehow reconfigured the right manifold (poly motor) to exhaust out to rear like the left? The post was around 2 years ago. He had photos showing one and a few for sale. I tried to reach him but no reply as yet. The right manifold pipe connects in the middle requiring a 90 degree bend and the place that put the exhaust in years ago butchered up the pipe coming off the manifold to make the bends. So much for getting the best price. This time I'm hunting for a place that knows what they're doing to put in new system. Before that my wondering about manifolds or headers...

Thanks - yeah I'm torn between the headers or staying with manifolds. What I read is putting in headers requires partially lifting the engine? I have the button shift and gather headers won't create a problem with the cables. I'm researching a poly engine rebuild now and I'll need to remove engine anyway; but looks like I'm going to wait until end of summer so I can drive the car over summer. People I've talked with will need engine at least two months or more. Engine still runs great. I need to get a new exhaust on it now though.

Yep, you will have to raise the engine a bit. I installed mine with my new motor so my engine was already out. I have a 727 push button as well and there is no issue with either trans cable. You will have to bend new transmission lines to run next to the oil pan.

Contact Gary Pavlovich, he knows polys. P.m. me if you want his email. He rebuilt my poly and I love it!

I have read about Gary's work; sounds like you had the best guy on the planet build your poly. What sort of work did you do for the trans to mate well with the motor?

polishing/extrude hone does very little for those manifolds. they don't have any separation or runners, just the old log style.

Stock 19 spline input shaft, rebuilt. Went through CRT and purchased a 2500 stall 19 spline converter, 11". TC set up for 7/16" bolts, flex plate was bought at napa. No issues getting it together. Used ARP crank bolts and TC bolts from CRT as well. Everything just about fell into place, real happy with it.

The member in question with the custom RH manifolds is chignikred.

Thanks much.

Great info to know as I look to arrange for my rebuild. Appreciate this.
