This guy got tired of replacing motors and switches over 40 something years so he had an extra set of cases and his buddy modified them. He cut out the headlight circles from between the vertical grill lines and added brite halogen bulbs to make up for the lost light from the vertical bars. Cool ness. Man after my own heart. And he can still close them for the solid look because he mated these to the back solid half.

Have you seen the Brazilian Dart Chargers? They were similar to that from the factory.

I like that idea, looks great...

I looked at the Brazilian darts and they do indeed have a very similar grille set up from the factory. I wonder what the law says about having "obstructions" in front of the lights though?

I have an inquiry in at the Vermont DMV/State troopers web page where you can ask them about stuff. They got back to me last night with a request for a picture of that Charger because the Chief Inspector for the state couldn't picture it from my explanation. He also asked for the town I live in so he can get clarification from the inspector for Addison County. So I hope to hear from them soon about whether I can do this and still drive it on public roads here.

Please disregard. I was going to suggest that it is better to ask for forgiveness, but it sounds like you have already opened Pandora's box.

Moparts has a thread showing Mopars from around the world. The Brazilian cars look cool but I still like our styling better. The others look cool to me mainly because they are familiar but slightly different.

I really like the other popular contributions from the Brazilians, namely the wax jobs on chicks.

I think that's going to look awesome with the tail light treatment your doing! Carry on!

lights..

Thanks, but I haven't decided to do it yet. Jury is still out. I am going to install the '66 Charger front grill and hideaway headlights that I now have. As soon as I hear back from DMV/Troopers about the modification I'll decide. I'm almost done with the tail lights. I sanded down the extensions today in preparation for welding the new inner wall and filler plates on. I also sliced off three of the broken mounting pins and drilled and tapped them for regular bolts. Here's some pics...

Okay Here is the reply from VT DMV.....:

Randy - Our Chief of Inspections shared the following;

If the headlamps are obstructed, it alters the original factory installation and would alter the amount of light being emitted; hence, it would not be legal. If the covers flip open and the beams are unobstructed, it would be fine.

Only 1940 and older vehicles, with antique or exhibition registrations are exempt from inspection, but still must be maintained by their owners with minimum safety requirements (see inspection manual on our website). If a 1940 and older vehicles has a regular registration, it is subject to all inspection requirements. Keep in mind antique and exhibition vehicles have very limited public highway use. All 1941 and newer vehicles, regardless of the type of registration, must meet the requirements of the Vermont Periodic Inspection Manual. Exhibition and Antique vehicles are cut some slack regarding inspections, but still must meet all inspection requirements outlined in the Special & Exhibition Vehicle Section (see page CAR 10.1). That being said, if these vehicles have regular registrations, they must meet all inspection requirements.

Soo...I guess if I want to do this to the headlight case I will have to do one of two things...Either somehow A. hinge or B. fasten the cover directly in front of the beams to be removable. I have little intention of driving after dark so the instances of needing to get out and do something to the case should be very seldom. Plus, I rarely even see a trooper around here and if I did pass one at night could he/she even tell there were narrow bars in front of the lights in the micro second of passing in the opposite direction? I will consider this for awhile and as with all other mods i'll draw it up and think on it. There is plenty of time before I'm into putting the front together. I'll also print up that picture and tack it up out in the garage and keep looking it over.
