So I am working on a 73 Charger and the a/c has been removed. The Heating system is still there but not functioning. I have chased wires and tested the blower. The blower works if you run a hot lead to it but only runs in low speed if I plug it in properly. The control panel is the original and is now hooked up but I have no fan speed controls and the heat is either "on" or off. Nothing else. If I go to def or heat or vent, it does not matter as it will always blow out the vents. I am also unable to affect the temperature using the temperature control. It is either "on" as hot as possible or "off". I can assume that I need to replace the controller but thought I would check to see if there is a problem based on the a/c system being ripped out as far as wiring and/or vaccuum lines.

Also was wondering if there are any good books, guides or reference materials for this system in this year auto. The generic Haynes manual for 71-82 mopars is incredibly vague.

Thanks for any help.

Well the A/C and heat are all together in the same box. The Heater core looks like two set end to end and acts like a donut. The controls operate various doors in the heater box via vacuum. The switch gets ruined by the buttons being pushed in much to hard, and separates the switch losing the vacuum.

You should get a factory service manual. It will help sort things out. But to get it right you'll probably need to fix/replace everything that's been torn out of your system.

Sounds like another case of someone being allowed near tools when they shouldn't have been

Ok thank you for the information. On an unrelated item, the temperature gage is also not functional and with the three books I have thus far the wiring arrangement does not cover the path. Would you be able to tell me where I could look on the engine for the potential connection so I can check the path from there? Thank you again.

Big block or small the sender is up front. On the big block it's in the water pump housing. Small block it's in the intake. Pull the wire and ground it. If the gauge pegs then you can guess the gauge itself is good, and the culprit will probably be the sender.

you should have a vacumn supply off of your intake running throught firewall to your heater control, which would in turn control your changing of the vents from floor to vents, also, you need to check you blower resistor which should be down by the glove box, under dash, on outside of box that holds you heater core, should have a couple plugs on it, unplug it and take it out and see if the little curry things are not burnt in half. this is probably part of your problem, usless you have a lot of wiring cut up from previouses. e me if you need any help, just fixed everything on my 74 RR, same crap.lbtthatsme@yahoo.com

I have a 1969 air conditioned RR with the same things going on .It was restored years ago but the heater was never hooked back up thier is just a wire coming from the heater motor . The motor works .I just do not know how to hook it up to the switch So I will track how you do it . It seems your getting good advice . Hope you can fix it

I think the motor plugs in to the resistor board, and so does the switch. Those coils on that board get really, REALLY hot, and a lot of the time they break. When that happens, the blower will do odd things. Maybe one speed. Maybe two. May blow high on low, low on the middle speed, and high again.
