    Hey Guys,

I just got back my new 383 for my 69 RR from my engine builder. I told him I wanted a streetable engine that had 400-450 HP. He put a comp cams roller XR286HR in it. It has edelbrock rpm heads, the whole thing was done. He put a high volume oil pump in it, my question is do I need one or can I use a regular oil pump? Doesn't a high volume pump need special oil pan and other stuff? It has the stock oil pan. I'm thinking it will suck all the oil out of the pan? Thanks!

With that selection of parts I’d put a good pan on it, it’ll turn some rpm with that cam and heads. Stock pans work on stock engines..

Thanks, do you have a suggestion for a pan? Do I really need a high volume oil pump?

Put a stock Hemi pan on it and you should be good.

            Will that fit a 383?

Seriously.. it pumps oil though restricted passages and dumps it into the block and then pan. Where do people suspect "extra" oil goes to empty the pan?

Yes, and it will fit your B body or most anything that a 383, 440, or 426 came in.

High RPM operation of the engine for extended periods of time can sometimes not allow the oil to return to the pan in a timely manner. Plus a little extra oil let's it cool better. A freshly built engine should have all oil passages clean for optimum flow. If you're not going to travel the interstates at 4 plus thousand rpms for miles your going to be fine.

Unless your launching hard enough to move
a lot of oil away from your pickup ,you shouldn't
                      have a problem.
                      Stock pan is my vote.

Get an oil pickup to match the pan and check how far off the bottom of pan it is.

To the top of the engine! That can happen with higher rpm's but it's usually not a problem with the bigger style baffled Hemi pan.

I did using a stock unbaffled pan but it was probably mostly due to harder acceleration even though it wasn't all that much. A baffled pan is needed on any high performance engine and the factory thought so too because the factory hi-po engines came with them. Saw the mechanical gauge peg 0 in my car more than once when launching off the line. Ever since the mid 70's, nothing less than a Hemi pan goes on my street cars.....

Your builder hopefully selected the HV pump based on the bearing clearances and used the proper pump driveshaft. The 6-qt hemi pan would fit and still give you good ground clearance. However, if you had a professional do the full build I wouldn't touch a thing. Any changes you make could void any warranties..

Are you drag racing on a regular basis? If not, it will be fine with the stock pan and a HV pump. No worries. Leave it alone, drive it, enjoy.
