I have a small block, supposed to be a 318, from '71 in my 67 Charger. The guy I bought the car from was told it was a 318. It has a Edlebrock 4B intake and an MSD. I just got it running and I think the motor is fresh because the oil is still very clean. I've had the car for 14 months and have never heard it run until recently.

The motor at idle has somewhat of a lope to it and I had it on the road today, and after warm up, the things pulls strong. I was wondering if there was a way to identify the heads without pulling the valve covers looking for casting numbers. The spark plugs are angled.

When I originally got the car I thought I would upgrade to a big block, but if this SB is built right I might reconsider.

I think if you really wanna know....... you’ll have to pull a cover.

Of course, if you’re happy with how it runs....... does it really matter what heads are on it?

I Agree! But you have to have:

2.02 valves
Roller rockers
Hi volume pumps (on the whole car)
Mini starter
3.55 gears
Green bearings
Amp meter bypass

Any thing Less and it needs Upgrades. just kiddn

enjoy the Charger with the small block, drive it around and see how it performs. Might be a keeper.

Here's a chart and a couple photos to help. Some also have a letter designation between the exhaust ports. You can see that from the outside. (between the spark plugs.) The green ones happen to be J heads. The letters are general casting designations only.
