I have a 67 dodge charger hemi for 26 with AAA 833 four-speed transmission 172 tooth fly wheel with a 11 inch clutch. I have the throwout bearing but I am looking to purchase the correct collar for my hemi set up. If anybody has a photo of what an original collar looks like and it's size I would appreciate it. I look forward to anybody's response.

You have the Direct Drive starter correct? If so try Johnsons Speed Shop in Lansing, last time i was out there he had a few Old stock / NOS Schiefer collar and bearing assemblies for your application. He also sells on Fleabay...

It is about a 1/4" shorter than the 440 version. I have one but not handy to take a pic of.

Wouldn’t it just be easier for the OP to purchase a complete throw out bearing?
I bought the throw out bearing from Brewars Performance but he didn't have the collar. I have a collar (see photo) but the Brewars TO Bearing center diameter is too large , see attached photo, and fits loosely on my collar. I did find a smaller TO bearing that does fit on my collar but I want to make sure when I depress the clutch that it will engage properly. Any comments are welcome. On the Hemi what should be the diameter of my trans shaft that accepts the collar? I have a service manual I have a perch book and I have a restoration book. I even bought a book on the A833 transmissions. In all of those books there is nothing that states what the diameter should be for the Hemi collar that fits onto the trans.

Dean, the reason i mentioned Johnsons Speed shop is because they dont sell just the collar, they "had" the complete assembly you need. I was there appox two years ago and they had Boxes of these Bearing assemblies, i bought 5 of each, and the remaining Discs & pressure plates for Mopars.. 628-0003/ 18 spline app. 68 & up. 628-0004/ 23 spline app. and the one you need 628-0005 for the Direct Drive starter appl. I made a copy of the Schiefer catalog while i was there, the release bearing info in the catalog was kind of vague, i had to do some research myself while there. All the 628-0005 that i bought i have sold on Ebay. I do know Johnsons were selling them on Ebay as well for quite some time, maybe they have some left??

here are the two I have. 1 Hemi direct drive(shorter one), and a 440 (longer version. and this is to show the difference in the two, and help you to see what you are looking for! These are not for sale!! I don't have a source or a part number. they (direct drive 66-69)are shorter, and the bearing is different as well. I bought this off of ebay years ago. the part number was scratched/warn off the box.

OK I have taken down all your information, saved all of your photos in a file and will call Johnsons again. I just returned the TO bearing to Brewars and in an email he tells me that the
step on the factory 18 spline collar is 1.625". Thanks again for the information. I am also going to call Brian in Long Island per 1968RT recommendation.

Throw Out bearing std vs direct drive.JPG
In my A833 Transmission book it shows the two different collar sizes but nowhere in the book does it say what the actual length of the collar is. When I see a TO Bearing and collar for sale, I always ask what the dimensions are so I can compare to the three sets I have purchased and returned becasue they don't fit.

I got mine from passion performance he modifys a 440 to work on a 426

Thanks for that attachment that describes why the two different length TO bearings. My car still has the direct drive starter so I may need to locate one for a spare. And a bearing retainer for the trans.

I have this one! I came with an 18 spline from a 69 440 Six Pack RR. The guy said it didn't shift rite for him, that's why he sold the Trans to me. I researched the part#, 2781123 and it is for a 172 tooth flywheel. It's a little chipped and could use a bearing!
