If i go with higher stall, lets say 2400, and am doing 50 mph, my rpms are lower than the stall speed (using rpm calculator). at 70, i will be above stall (around 2800 rpm) so what will it be like, driving 50mph?

say later, i want to add overdrive, will i need to swap in a lower stall converter?

I'm running a 11 inch 2400 stall converter in my 66 and the only time I can tell it has a stall is when I first take off. There's no surging at highway speeds. I think it really maters what size converter you have as far as diameter . If you run a 9 inch 2400 stall converter it will surge more on the highway than say a 11inch 2400 stall converter. This has been my experience anyway.

I run a 4000 stall on the street. The main place it gets me is when I am in second gear at low RPM's, or 3rd gear and low RPM's and don't want to mash the accelerator past the stall speed. The easing up to speed with a stall this high is annoying to say the least. Mine will have to jump 1k in RPM just to feel it move if I am in the 2k RPM range. But the stall you are talking about should not even be noticable IMO. Unless you are running a 2.xx rear gear ratio.

what size tires do you have? what are your rpms going 65-70?

I have 2800 stall. Rear ratio is 3,91. Car is in everyday use and no problemo.

I'm running a 323 gear with 235 70 15 rear tires. I don't have a tach but at 70 mph it's turning around 2700 rpm give or take 100 rpm either way.

You mentioned that you would later like to add an "overdrive" trans.

IMHO, if moneys of no concern, the 2400 you referenced will not be a problem. Many of todays street/strip converters stall at considerably less than the advertised numbers and cruising with anything up to a 3800 converter (3.,91 gear minimum) has never been a problem for me.

If money is a concern, hold off on the converter purchase for the OD trans, as you'll probably be looking at a stall converter that is capable of "locking up" in high gear. It sounds like you're running a "non lock up" converter now.

Southernman

ga66mopar - thanks for the info

Southernman - OD...later on maybe something like a gear vendor. don't want to hack things up to fit the OD tranny. i will prob keep the 727.

I'm running a TCI 2400 in my 66 Bel with 3.55's and 235 70 15's and it seems to be fine. My speedo is waaaay off so I have no idea what's going on but I know I'm turning 2800 RPM and passing semis. 3400 RPM and I'm running right along with traffic if not faster than most.
