Hello all,

I have been rebuilding a 4160 style Holley 650 that I got for a song - not surprised it has some issues but I'd like to get it running right anyway. This is a stock carb for a 1968 440. I'd like to use it on my resurrected 383 for a while, so I don't want anything fancy or pricey.

I can see that somebody has been into this carb before, and the first odd thing I see are #59 main jets. I can't find any resource on the web to verify this, but wouldn't you expect to see jets closer to mebbe #65 for a carb this size? Could these #59's really be stock?

I also see something strange in the secondary bowl assembly. I am used to double pumpers with a secondary metering block, so the metering plate business is new to me. I see there is a metering plate/body - looks more like a metering body because it is about 0.10" thick. Underneath that is a rectangular gasket the size of the entire bowl, and then an anodized rectangular plate that same size. Under the plate is another gasket and then the carb main body. What is perhaps odd is the lack of what you might call a metering sealing plate. This would be a thin funny shaped plate shaped just like the metering plate/body, and it would be sandwiched between the carb body and the metering plate/body. I see them in exploded diagrams of the 4160 series. Does the big rectangular plate I found serve this function? Or did somebody rebuild the secondary area and discard the funny shaped plate?

I just would like to know that all the pieces are there. Maybe back in '68 the plate was indeed a big rectangular affair, rather than the funny shaped ones you see in more recent models. Again, I am familiar with double pumpers, but not the vacuum secondary models.

Thanks!

Hey Doug, I have an older Holley catalog circa 1990. It dont show a list # 3918. A 3418 yes. Are you sure about those #s?

I just checked it again - it is indeed a list 3918. Here's another odd thing about it: there is an air bypass adjustment screw next to the primary bowl vent. Pull it out and it looks just like a bigger version of an idle mixture screw. Never seen that before.

I think Mortec has a good listing of the older Holleys. Sorry I couldent be more help.

I appreciate your taking a look. Interestingly enough, I was surfing Youtube and found some old Chrysler training videos. One of them was an introduction to the new Holley carburetors for 1967. Sure enough, they featured a carburetor that looked very much like mine. It included an air bypass adjustment system as well.

I think I will take a leap of faith and increase the primary jets to 66, because I just can't imagine the 59 jets are large enough for a 650 cfm carb. They do appear to have been changed, judging by their appearance.

A merry Christmas to all!

There is four versions of that and they all use 64 primary jets
This was for 1968 440

Thank you; I appreciate the corroboration of my suspicion. I'll jet it up and see how it runs.
