I pass a junk yard on my way to work everyday. Today I was surprised to see a old car on a trailer at the gate, a 72 charger. Not in great condition, but not bad looking metal and body all there going by at 40mph. I was excited to someone saving the car. Maybe they were swapping in a magnum they found at the junk yard or were looking for some other parts. Suddenly I saw the car lerch to the side and to my horror a for lift lifted the car off the trailer by the roof and took it off into the junk yard. Its not a big yard and the turn around is fast... if i wasnt leaving town this weekend i would be at the yard asking how to save it. Maybe I saw wrong. I hope I did, but if some one is interested in investigating google....

some are too far gone
but its a shame to crush as the bones could help others..

Sad to say this is happening more and more these days. :( There are a lot of 71-74 B bodies that people have been sitting on for years waiting for them to become The Next Big Thing, and now that values have been going down for years they are trying to sell them and there's no buyers. Who wants to spend $10k or $20k restoring when of these cars when the market is flush with really nice drivers for $8k or restore ones for about $15k?

The end result is after languishing for months on craigslist, the owner ends up selling them to the scrapper. :(

It's so sad bad true. Most if not all of us are willing to spend a lot more on these cars than they are worth but we do it because we love these cars, the hobby and the satisfaction of rebuilding something. Like you said most are selling shells with little parts for 10,000 or more and we cant afford to buy and build it at the same time. Makes me sad but that's capitalism I suppose.

I ran into a similar situation recently. I have a 72 roadrunner and found a 72 charger (as if I need another project) that I wanted to save. Guy just wanted to much and could not provide a title so I let it go. Plus I won't buy a car with out a title, just to much risk.

There's a guy near me listing a 67 Coronet 500 small block car.

No price in ad, but said no title.

I emailed and was told $2200.

I said I pay about $650 for parts cars, unless they have super desirable parts, and he replied that after he took off "all the good parts", he still wouldn't sell it for $650.

Now it says $800 minus seats and console.

At $800 you could probably get your money back, but it would take a while.

I might have been a player at $800 for the whole thing including the seats, but they guy wouldn't even consider or counter my offer. Now I'm out. Good luck with that!

.....that's exactly the kind of attitude that sends a car to the crusher for $75 instead of getting my $650, and letting us both make some money.

Every time I see a project car I have the same reaction that my daughter has when she sees some poor, neglected, animal on the street. Like my daughter, I have to get past the emotional response to take it home and save it and focus on the rational response, which is I really don't need a rusty POS taking up space in my garage, back yard, front yard, living room,....

I can just see the commercial now:

Everyday, mopars are being abused, beaten, torn apart, and slowly dying everyday with cancer. For just $619.69 a month, THAT'S ONLY $19.99 A DAY! You too, can save a poor Mopar from certain abuse and ultimate destruction. Think about it, for just $19.99 cents a day you can save this beautiful charger from being crushed, cure it's cancer and give it the life it truly deserves. These Mopars didn't asked to be thrown away and left forgotten, they just want to be loved and cared for. If you call and donate now, we will send you a picture of a mopar that you saved. Just like Betsy here:

...except "Betsy" there is a 71 Super Bee with a N96 RamCharger hood.

I know, I just pulled a pic off Google to be funny. Hopefully I didn't offend anyone, that wasn't my intention.
