How many quarts of ATF?

I have a fresh 727 (no fluid in it), a fresh TC (a little fluid in it) and a Mopar Performance Deep Trans Pan. The instructions say to add 4-6 quarts of ATF. At this point I've put in a bit more (about 9 quarts) and when I check the fluid level it's barely on the dipstick.

I don't have any puddles under the car so it's not leaking anywhere. So how much ATF in a dry trans, new TC and deep trans pan?

If I remember correctly nothing will go into the converter until the engine is started and placed in neutral. The deep pan will hold quite a bit and once started and placed in neutral the fluid will be pumped through the system so have extra on hand.

I start at 7 and work from there trust the dipstick if its right for the trans. Be sure to check in neutral.

Someone told me about 12-14... I'm at 10 now and it's not registering yet. I got the Lokar dipstick and I tend to believe that it's accurate or they'd have a lot of complaints. I'll have to get a couple more quarts tomorrow and see if that helps. Thanks for the "N" suggestion, for some reason I thought Drive, so now I know!

IIRR The deep pan holds 4 qrts and the convertor holds 2 qrts then 6-7 for the trans. You check the trans level in "N" when the car is HOT (180*)

When I got my trans from A&A Transmission, Rick told me to put a qrt. in the convertor then put it on. Put 6 qrts in the trans then check from there, keep adding a qrt from that point on. I think I got to 10 before it showed on the stick.

The late model truck 727 style tranny's (92 to 96) with the stock pan would hould about 12 qts when I did an overhaul on them. So I would say a basically dry trans with a deep pan will hold around 12 qt's. Ron

You can't go by that. I put a Milodon oil dipstick into my Milodon oil pan last year and it wouldn't even register oil. Called them and they insisted it was the correct part number........ Makes for an expensive plug for the tube
