How much of an oddball am I?

It's awesome.

But don't you get tons of heat and slip with the high stall converter and overdrive?
Those two are kinda opposites.
That is a tricky wicket at times. If I don't accelerate, it's fine. But if I give it too much throttle it heats up quick and isn't doing the clutches any good. I typically leave it off unless going highway speeds, which isn't often. It's more of a run around the back country roads type of thing. Nevertheless, you're spot on. BTW... the GV went in before the current (3rd) engine and the A&A Ultimate tranny.

I had a Gear Vendors for a little while. I had a 727 and a 3000 stall converter. At speeds below 70, it had part throttle response like a boat on the water...slippy and lazy. I hated it.

I like what you have done with it as I bet most hardcore car guys would. Don't let the haters bring you down, you are having more fun driving than they are waxing and dusting.

The car I’m talking about is my 66 Charger. It’s ratty looking, loud, and is, in a word, angry. I love it. But I don’t think it fits into any category… neither of us do I guess. I go to various car shows and people literally turn their nose up at it, “When you going to fit it?” But then there’s that one kid that loses his mind over it and says, “That’s what batman would drive” – both are fun for me.

It has the engine for a drag car, with a lot of HP, 4800 stall, and a race tranny. But it also has large wilwood all the way around with QA1 suspension, so it handles like a house fly, but has CalTracs in the back. It’s 4.10 sure-trac, but a GV underover, so it’s neck-breaking out of the hole, but will run on the highway. The lights work as does the dash, but I have a digital dash covering it.

I wanted to build a muscle car, and I ended up making something that may not do one thing great, but it does a lot of things really good.

Oddball?

Looks cool and as long as you enjoy it why not

You guys are AWESOME! I had no idea I'd get that kind of response. A very sincere thank you to all of you. I needed that :)
I go back to when these cars were new/almost new. Well, guess what. What you got is the way many of the guys cars were back in the day. They WERE NOT trailer queens handled like dainty dishes. They were DRIVEN ! Hard. And we had fun working on them and driving them. Do the same !

Looks awesome
it's your car, do what you want to do with it ! enjoy it !
my charger is in the same category. it's not original, i will never restore it, and if i feel like modifying even more, [i have other things planned] i'm gonna do it !
i'm just gonna beat on it and have fun doing so. if something breaks, i'll just repair it with upgraded parts and see what is the next weakest link.
after i croak, let the next caretaker "restore" it..........
:drinks:

I have a similar set up in my 71 Charger except I am using a 5.7 crate Hemi, TKX 5 spd and 3.55 in a 8.75.

I love the look and sound of your car. I completely understand where you're coming from as I'm in the same boat. After I first bought my car, 10 years ago this year, I took it to a lot of car shows because I thought it was cool and unique. I soon got sick of the idiots asking me when I was going to restore it. I only take it to Mopar events, now. Only Mopar people really get it. Some non-Mopar car people kind of get it, but non-car people are totally clueless about it.
All I know is I don't see the rust when I'm blowing the tires off it and flying down the road in it.

AWESOME! Your car is badass. That whole "when are you going to fix it..." drove me little batty. But you nailed it - and I think this thread (unintended) is testament Mopar guys are pure car guys.

I think your car is great, and the important thing is that you enjoy it. Car shows have lots of "haters" that love to go around and make themselves feel better by picking apart other people rides. Don't let those idiots drag you down!

I think every car has its pros and cons. My 70 Road Runner has zero rust and is very nice everywhere you look. It still gets driven a lot, but I'm careful about where I park it, and fret over it a bit.

The 73 has some rust coming around the rear quarters and a couple of other places. My buddy and I drove it 11,057 miles across country - out and back. We drove it HARD and it was great to have a car that worked well but you didn't have to worry so much about the paint. Let me tell you - it put a lot of smiles on my face driving it!

After getting the Roadkill vibe I decided that they all don't have to be show cars, and primed drivers like I drove back in the day are a lot more fun and are less stressful to enjoy. I threw together a couple of drivers, you can lean on them, drive the harder that you would with a show poodle and rest your beer on the fender after you get them back to the garage.

I think its great to drive them and have fun.
My brother and I painted our charger in 1988. It's got many, many wounds over the years of wrenching and driving it. It deserves better and someday we hope to redo it... but until that day comes, you won't see it at a car show. Look for it going down the highway, cruising... or at the dragstrip. This last year we put a 440 in it to keep it running while we freshened up the 510. Hopefully it will get back in this spring. This year will be 30 years of having a stroker engine in it, next year will be 40 years of driving it. Where does the time go?

Drive them! I took my wagon on the Power Tour West 2024. 1700 miles on a relatively unknown car. Sucked a quart of oil every 2-3 tanks, but otherwise ok. Taken it to the Van Nuys shows 3 times so far plus other ventures. Always gets thumbs up and the dogs love cruising in it. Been taking care of stuff on it as I can swing it. It's not going to be a show/trailer poodle. Same on my 65 Coronet project. Drive em!
