How would you get a Vin

engines have vin numbers, they get swapped out all the time........

late model cars have a vin sticker on every panel, used body parts are a huge industry

Engines don't have titles, either.

And they do not just pull panels and give you them to you either. You get an invoice on the sale. With that invoice number form a legit salvager any panel or part of a salvage vehicle down be traced back to the original vehicle it was taken from.

Yep and now you can buy illegal to buy, own or install your self rivites and id tages. You had better check on the fines and jail time before you do that one. Big federal offence.

You should investigate the validity of your opinion prior to assuming that a licensed Agent is doing something "illegal". We work with the DMV, DOT NICB and many Automotive Manufacturers to supply replacement VIN products to the Collision & Restoration Industry. Prior to Chrysler becoming FCA, they supplied us with those rivets for Industry distribution. If the Federal Agencies we work with didn't consider what we do as "illegal", why would you?

"Intent" is the one thing that many of you have overlook in the equation. Check the bylaws in the link below. (Most states have similar Federal programs.) It's semantical to say that it is "legal" to chop a donor car completely apart and weld it back together around small metal pieces stamped with a VIN but it is "illegal" to reverse the process by welding the stamped pieces onto a donor car.

What sense does it make to compromise the original integrity of Factory Quarter Panels, Roof, Trunk Pan, Pillars, Frame Rails, etc...... and then "Frankenstein" them back into their original assembled configuration and claim that process is technically considered "legal"? When you build another vehicle and assign it the same Vehicle number, that is considered a "clone" and is illegal. I've seen cars repaired that were totaled by the Insurance Company and basically reconstructed with all new body panels. There was no attempt at "fraud" or criminal intent in the repair, thus no crime. Who determines the allowable number of replacement "cookie cutter" Body components that can be used and considered a "legal" repair? Is it 3 Panels? 8 Panels......12 Panels? More? Who determines that criteria?

Modification of a body panel with the VIN is all it takes to break the law.... It is illegal to modify alter remove the VIN number on any vehicle... You can not take it off, alter it, cut off that part of the body, by removing the vin you have knowingly committed fraud if you ever sell it. Now one day you do sell it and it gets inspected. Guess who's door the police will be knocking on...

Most glass panels/windows are etched with a VIN identifier. How many people are breaking the law when they have their vandalized auto glass replaced? Vehicles with Anti-Theft labels on their wrecked Body Panels are being replaced by Collision Centers when they have been in an accident. How many Collision Shop Owner's are being prosecuted or violating the VIN laws when repairing a vehicle back to pre-accident condition? What's the purpose of Collision Centers if their services are promoting criminal activity when they replace VIN etched Glass or Body Panels that have VIN identifiers? Are these "criminal" establishments operating in broad daylight and the Automotive Federal Agencies over looking what they are doing?

Without getting into the law, and general intent. What is your intent? Are you taking the VIN from a HEMI cuda and putting it on a similar year car to claim you own a Hemi cuda? And what are you going to do with it when done, drive it or try and sell it. A survivor car is only a survivor once. If you want a hemi or a 440-6 in car car to enjoy, and even brag a little, the VIN doesn't really matter. If your throwing it together to sell it ,and lead the buyer to believe its a surveyor than yes it FRAUD, and illegal. Built your car and enjoy the it, and just because it dint come from the factory with a H or V code, 45 years ago doesn't mean it won't be fun to drive.
